How does Hierarchy Logic in RTC Source Control Components work?

 

 

 

Problem: When the component is selected, multiple sub-components are getting added to the stream.

 

Steps to reproduce:
1. Select the repository workspace.
2. Click Add in components.
3. Select the option " component in another repository workspace or stream"
4. Select the first component
5. Click Finish

 

Actual Output: The selected component is adding sub-components into the repository workspace.

 

1) Reason for adding sub-component into the workspace when root component is added
If a user operates on a component that has subcomponents (add component, remove component, create baseline, and others), the operation will be applied to the entire component hierarchy as fully as possible.  The intent of is that a component and its full set of subcomponents behave, and can be operated on, as a unit.

2) Reason for not adding root component into the repository workspace when sub-component is added
The parent component is dependent on all its subcomponents, whereas the subcomponents are independent components.  They can be developed individually and may be by different teams as well. Hence, any operation on them directly will not affect the parent component in the component hierarchy.

One of the Best ways to have the specific version changes (change Set) into the Rational Team Concert (RTC) Repository workspace (Sandbox)

 

 

 

Please find the below scenario and use case as an example:
 

PartA:

1) UserA Eg: Hello.java created 20 version

2) UserA <Lock> the file hello.java version.

3) UserA Repository worksapce Set Flow target <Bi-Directional> to Stream

 

Note: UserB needs only Specific Version into the Repository workspace.

4) UserB Repository workspace Set Flow target <Uni-Directional> (incoming) from Stream.

5) UserB Repository workspace Check the <Pending Changes> into the Stream.

6) UserB Repository workspace Select the Specific (for example, Hello.java version 10 ) <Change Set> and <Accept> the changes from <Pending Changes>.

7) UserB Repository workspace Select the Specific option <Merge Initial Change Sets>

8) UserB Repository workspace Opens the <Change to Merge Editor> under the < Resulting Change Set > Click <Complete> and <Ok> . Closing Editor click <ok>

 

PartC:

Note: UserB gets to see the specific changes in the UserB Repository Workspace and Workspace Changes will not flow into the Stream since its Unidirectional changes.  Also, the file can’t be modified since it is locked by UserA.

Enabling the RepoDebug service for Jazz Team Server (JTS) and Rational Team Concert (RTC) WebSphere Application Server (WAS) Liberty application server

 

 

 

The debug service is a general-purpose service that serves as the central location for finding various REST APIs that are useful for debugging. It was introduced into Jazz Foundation in v4.0.6 and is available for all JAF-based web applications.

 

Steps:

1. Login to the CCM admin page and navigate to the Advanced Properties.

2. Search for the Property: 'Enable repodebug service' and change the default 'false' to 'true'. Save it.
   
   Note: Try the same steps with JTS application and save the configuration or any other applications follow the same steps.
   
    
3. Navigate to the Installation location  (for example:  C:\InstalledSoftwares\CLM605\server >>)
   
    Edit the server.startup.bat
   
    
4. Uncomment the below parameters in the server.startup.bat file and save it.
   
    Note:  The below steps need a Server RESTART to get the latest changes.
   
   set JAVA_OPTS=%JAVA_OPTS% -Dcom.ibm.team.repository.debug.users=JazzAdmins
   set JAVA_OPTS=%JAVA_OPTS% -Dcom.ibm.team.repository.debug.accessServiceEnabled=true
   
    
5. Restart the server.

Unidirectional & Bi Directional flow controls in IBM Rational Team Concert (RTC) Streams  ( SIT \ UAT\ PROD) and Best Usage.

 

 

 

Below is one of the example for creating a RTC streams ( SIT \ UAT\ PROD) code delivery

 

Best usages & control of smooth code delivery between RTC streams (SIT, UAT and Prod)

 

Note: One of the best ways is to make sure SIT,UAT,Pre-PROD and PROD should be Unidirectional flows, so that it will not affect the existing codes.

                                               

                                                    SIT ==> UAT ==> Pre-PROD ==>PROD

 

The process is:

1. Developers deliver their changes to Main Development Streams and it goes to Integration Stream.
    
2. Which has a "continuous build" defined on it that includes automated tests and promoted into SIT
    
3. From the above test results of the continuous build, a tester will promote either a set of baselines or a set of changesets from SIT to UAT.
    
4. When UAT passes all of its tests, UAT is promoted to Production

 

 

Below are a few things should be taken care of for smooth change flow.

 

1) The more frequently that you accept and deliver (assuming that your deliveries never break the product)

2) Merge in a small set of changes than a large set of changes.

3) The flow targets of a workspace have no effect on whether or not a change set shows up as ready to be accepted by other team members who share the same flow target. It is only when you have actually delivered
Note: Make sure with the local code changes before you deliver into the streams

4) If you don't have any latest common changes, there shouldn't be any conflicts

5) A delivery of the code is made from the Module Streams to the Main Development stream.

You may have noticed that there is a new feature in RTC 6.0.5 regarding Keyword expansion.

Using the server setting “Server Default for Line Delimiter Handling” = NONE and usage limitation and understanding.

Users use a mixture of Windows and Linux platforms so have to manage the line endings carefully.

 

There is this statement:
"When keyword expansion is enabled for a load operation, all text files (those files whose line delimiter is set to a value other than NONE) are processed for keyword expansion."

1. Why should there be this dependency between Keyword expansion and the line delimiter setting?
When the delimiter is set to NONE, that file could be a binary file which we might not be able to read/modify. Hence those files are not processed for keyword expansion.

 

2. How is the Keyword expansion enabled for a load operation if it is only used for the CLI and builds?
At load time, the load operation is configured to expand keywords. Once content is loaded with keywords expanded, they will continue to be expanded for that loaded content such that additional accepts will update keywords and the keywords will be updated on check-in as well.

 

3. Does this mean the Keyword expansion is enabled for a load operation using the Eclipse client?
Currently there is an enhancement request open to support this feature in rich clients as well

How to get a specific IBM Rational Team Concert (RTC) component Baseline code into the RWS (Sandbox)

 

 

 

Scenario: Developer would need the specific baseline code into RWS\Sandbox for testing.

 

Part A: Using RTC Eclipse Client

Example: Assume the Developer has already loaded the component with the latest baseline code and would need the specific baseline code for testing.

 

Procedure:

Navigate to a repo workspace on a stream (where that old version was baselined), select component in a repository workspace or stream in the Team Artifacts window and click on "Replace with".
           Baseline: Replaces your component with the baseline component and Save the RWS

 

 Note: You can then choose the baseline you want to see, and it will be downloaded if you have a local workspace or sandbox.

 

Part B: Using RTC Command Line.

 

Already have a workspace

To replace a component with a specific baseline, you can use the set component command

 

lscm set component -r <server url> -b <baseline to replace with> <target ws> <target-workspace> <replace-type> <replace-source>  component

Avoid using the custom attribute ids for Voting Feature implementation in IBM Rational Team Concert (RTC).

 

Voting Feature in Rational Team Concert

 

 

Below are a few issues that might occur in-case if you use the custom attribute ids which is not recommended.

 

1. When using the voters field in the queries and searching for items not containing a certain voter, not all items in the query results are correct.
    
2. You could see that there are votes with the new and the old IDs in those two items.
    
3. Query that works with the labels end up with wrong output.
    
4. Issue in synchronizing attribute values.
   
   Note: After creating with the predefined ids, you will see the following issue.
    
5. The old ones didn't update the votes field as an integer to each id item that has already been created.
