What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. Except DevOps, that comes back with you.
So you’re going to IBM Pulse 2014 in Las Vegas. Three days of learning and education on some of the best products Cloud & Smarter Infrastructure (C&SI, previously Tivoli) has to offer. Hey, it's Vegas and I'm sure you have plans to see other things besides the inside of MGM's conference center. So let me encourage you to "come on down" to the Hands-On Labs room on the third floor of the Conference Center. Here you will find almost every product C&SI has to offer available as Virtual Machine Images pre-loaded and tested to provide easy to follow examples to get your hands dirty with the products.
While there are many labs you can try, I'd like to specifically invite you to come check out Lab K-17, Delivering DevOps. In this lab we will be demonstrating the capabilities of Rational's latest acquisition, UrbanCode Deploy. The lab is designed to walk you through a Continuous Delivery process from start to finish. We will use Rational Team Concert (RTC) for source control. We'll demonstrate RTC's integration with Jenkins to drive our Continuous Integration (CI) builds. We'll use our CI builds to push newly built and unit tested artifacts into UC Deploy's artifact repository (to be used later as part of our automated deployment). You'll then learn how to model your applications in UC Deploy, and how to utilize good separation of concerns by splitting you applications into smaller, easily manageable components. You'll see how easy it is to define a process to "deploy" your application and it's components onto a set of deployment target machines. Have you used Chef before? You’ll get a chance to. How about Vagrant? Yup, that's in there too. Finally, we introduce you to some of the capabilities of Rational Test Workbench (formally GreenHat) to provide functional verification tests as part of our automated deployment to ensure that your application works as intended. It's all there, ready for you to play around with. The only thing that we don't have in the lab is a DJ, but you can find that at dev@Pulse.
I know what your thinking, I'm an Operations/Sys Admin, why do I care about these things from Rational that are meant for Developers? You’ve heard by now about this new idea called DevOps. Do you want to gain some understanding of what DevOps is all about? First thing you need to know is that the term DevOps is a combination of Dev (Developer) and Ops (Operations/Sys Admin), so don't think we aren't talking to you Ops guys out there. The next thing to do is to attend some of the talks going on at Pulse in the Clou
