The Need for Speed

"Every great innovation runs through a developer's hands."—Kristof Kloeckner, GM of IBM Rational Have you hugged your developer today? Because if you haven't, you probably should. This morning at Innovate 2014 we learned that there is a new renaissance going on in the developer community, one in which there is no boundary between the programmer and the customer. According to Steve Robinson, GM of Cloud Platform Services at IBM, developers are the new kingmakers. And it's all about speed. In the opening general session, Innovate@SPEED, Kloeckner shared his insights on becoming a composable business and how to accelerate business delivery cycles with confidence through efficiency, value and speed. In other words, through reliable DevOps. Trust is key in balancing risk and speed. As Kloeckner said, you wouldn’t drive a car anywhere near the speed limit if you couldn’t trust your steering, measurements, instrumentation and safety systems. The need to trust processes and platforms is paramount.
Which brings us to the new and improved BlueMix Platform as a Service and its brand new enhancements: Appscan for web and mobile; continuous delivery pipeline; workflow; and embeddable reporting. The services, which have been in beta, will be available in the US at the end of this month. (How's that for speed?) Attendees were able to see firsthand what the new BlueMix can do in a live coding demo showcasing the San Francisco BART transit system and its new mobile app that tracks status at train yards. Steve Robinson acknowledged the fun of live coding at a developer conference. It's like "having a heart attack at a medical conference...plenty of help."
In the longstanding tradition of developer outreach and training, IBM will open BlueMix garages (basically workspaces for IT startups) in the Bay Area the end of this month. No word yet on whether foosball tables are included.
