Systems at Innovate Daily Highlights - Monday
What a whirlwind of exciting events yesterday, we hope you were able to participate and enjoy all of the content we’ve had to offer you thus far. And just in case you missed something here are some of the systems highlights from yesterday:
Systems Keynote - What’s NOW in Complex and Embedded Systems
The second annual complex and embedded systems keynote was filled with exciting content and announcements…, heck even some robots joined in the fun! The executive team took center stage to communicate our vision to help address the unique challenges of our systems and software engineering clients by investing in technology, best practices and industry solutions. The team discussed new product and industry enhancements that will continue to build out the robustness of our solution.
The extended business partner ecosystem was also front-and-center showing our commitment to industry partnerships for lifecycle quality management, systems engineering and industry solutions. IBM recognizes the power of a larger community and it is through this community that the team is committed to helping our clients be successful.
Monday’s keynote: Next Now! Smarter Software and Product Delivery
Hosted by Gina Poole, VP, Rational Marketing and noted TV Producer, Cleantech Innovator and founder of Future360.tv, Sarah Backhouse, the Monday general session and keynote included presentations from IBM executives on what’s NEXT in software and product development technology, methodologies, and industry trends. IBM senior executives shared the stage with Amir Gomroki, VP, R&D Operations IP & Broadband, Ericsson and Brian Wells, VP, Corporate Engineering, Raytheon who showed how software and systems innovation is helping create new business opportunities.
Systems Engineering Birds of a Feather Luncheon
Systems engineering conversations were abundant (and energetic!) during our first face to face systems engineering user group community meeting on Monday. Attendees were able to network with peers and mingle with our IBM systems executive team while testing their skills during the Watson Jeopardy challenge! New members were also signed up! Thank you to all that joined and if you were not able to attend and would like to sign up for the systems engineering virtual user group community, visit http
First Robotics competition teams and their robots were spotted ‘showing off” throughout the conference. Robots took center stage with our executive team during the systems keynote, others were spotted helping out at the information desk, and some decided to show their skills with a little rebound rumble …Nothing but net!
Yesterday, executives were treated to 3 great sessions focused on challenges associated with developing smarter products. Representatives from Raytheon Missile Systems, Diagnostic Grifols and Volvo each presented the challenges they faced with developing smarter products and the business strategies they have employed to address these challenges.
Next, a panel discussion led by Meg Selfe, VP of Complex and Embedded systems focused on “The Convergence of Engineering Disciplines in Modern Product Development”. This is a very hot topic given the recent changes in product development that companies are making to stay competitive; thus, the panel included some heavy hitters, including John Thomas, President of INCOSE, Tony Baer, a leading analyst at Ovum, Brian Wells of Raytheon, David Mitchell of Siemens PLM, and Sky Matthews of IBM Rational. As expected, discussion was lively around this provocative subject.
The final Systems session featured Phil Hester of National Instruments and Angus Robertson of Spirent, both Rational business partners. Led by Mark Lefebvre, Director of Systems Alliances and Integrations, the session focused on challenges and tradeoffs associated with achieving product quality, "If Quality is an Afterthought, It's Too Late!". Mr. Hester and Mr. Robertson presented their strategies for helping clients achieve higher quality, and Mr. Lefebvre led a discussion around how these two business partners add value to the Rational portfolio.
Systems Engineering Networking Evening
Who says systems engineers don’t like to party? (oh wait, no one says that!)… Good times were had by all in attendance at the lively systems engineering networking evening on Monday night. Local organizations IEEE and INCOSE as well as our IBM Rational team enjoyed conversation, appetizers and of course some tasty libations! Oh, and cheesecake on a stick, pure genius!
Tuesday’s not to be missed events and sessions:
Don’t miss the general keynote session, Right Now, Opportunity Accelerated.
This keynote offers our first CTO summit, bringing together CTO’s of Rational, Websphere, Emerging Internet Technologies and Tivoli to explore how the ‘next big things’ will affect the ways in which we develop and deliver software and systems innovation. Also speaking is extreme Adventurer, charismatic storyteller and best selling author of Everest to Arabia, Jamie Clarke. Clarke will keep you at the edge of your seat as she shows you how decision-making NOW can be the difference between life and death NEXT, when you’re 29,000 feet up the side of Mount Everest.
