Migrating your IBM Rational tools to the Jazz Platform

Whether you want to migrate completely or create a bridge between your current IBM Rational products and the IBM Jazz products, the following guide can help you to learn about the different options you have from a technical point of view.
Toward the end of last year a new feature, IBM Rational ClearCase Version Importer, was added to IBM Rational Team Concert (RTC). This tool is now shipped and included at no charge with IBM Rational Team Concert V4.0.5 and higher.
ClearCase Version Importer is a one-way data replication tool that pulls data from IBM Rational ClearCase and places that data into Rational Team Concert source control. With this tool, you can migrate all the versions in any branch of Rational ClearCase with a single operation. The version branching is also replicated in Rational Team Concert source control.
This importer also preserves the checked-in user information, time and date stamps and properties of a file. All of this metadata was unrecoverable when migrations were conducted in the past (unless the migration was done manually). This new feature can also import Rational ClearCase view configurations because Rational Team Concert V4.0.6 and higher now has baseline capabilities.
Do you already own IBM Rational ClearCase and IBM Rational ClearQuest? If you do, you can obtain the full Rational Team Concert with an RCM bundle upgrade.
How does this migration work?
Essentially, to conduct your migration you would run a program at a command line to export a source tree from Rational ClearCase to a local directory, which is called the data directory. This is the export phase. After this is completed, you might want to transport the data directory to another site where the RTC deployment is based (this is optional). Finally, you would execute the import by running another command to import from the data directory into your RTC repository.
So what’s new In IBM Rational Collaborative Lifecycle Management V5.0?
Filtering versions: Now we have a way to remove unwanted versions of files when migrating from Rational ClearCase. For example, if you would like to filter out older versions of files with a given date, you are now able to do that very easily. If necessary, you can also select versions that have no history and eliminate them from your migration.
ClearQuest-enabled UCM migration: ClearCase Version Importer will also add links from imported change-sets to work items when Rational ClearCase and Rational ClearQuest are migrated together. This helps Unified Change Management (UCM) environments migrate appropriately and prevents the need for rework.
Performance improvement: The large scale imports now complete three to five times faster than in previous versions of Rational Collaborative Lifecycle Management. This allows for a timely migration.
But what if I can’t migrate right now?
If the timing is bad and you would like to simply connect to Rational Team Concert using your existing Rational products, then you have that option too!
In Rational ClearCase: If you would still like to take advantage of the features and functionality that Rational Team Concert has to offer, yet want to keep your existing Rational ClearCase software configuration management (SCM) solution in tact for the time being, then I would suggest using the Rati
