Read more about it in the IBM Systems Magazine article Enterprise COBOL 5.1 – Where Tradition Meets Innovation.
Performance benefit can sometimes be difficult to quantify because it depends on a number of factors, such as how the application is written, system configuration, hardware architecture it runs on, etc. To enable you to plan and assess the real value that could be gained by your applications, today, IBM is shipping a “try before you buy” version of the new COBOL compiler, Enterprise COBOL Developer Trial for z/OS V5.
Enterprise COBOL Developer Trial for z/OS V5.1 is identical to Enterprise COBOL for z/OS v5.1. It comes with a 90-day, zero-charge evaluation license and does not initiate single version charging (SVC). There are no imposed restrictions in function and performance. You can also try out new programming features and determine how best to use of them in your applications. The only difference is that code compiled with Enterprise COBOL Developer Trial can only be used in non-production environments. It cannot be used in production.
