The Cloud Enabling Technologies and DevOps kickoff at IBM Pulse focused on DevOps and PaaS in the enterprise, and how DevOps drives agility and innovation. Moe Abdula, VP SmartCloud Foundation, began the session with a look into how Cloud is changing the way work gets done. He touched on how moving towards agile, optimized composable business requires a transformation, and how that transformation allows developers to break free of traditional constraints and develop more quickly and innovatively. Shigeyoshi Shimotsuji, told how Toshiba is building a dynamic cloud using IBM technologies “to go from IT to IoT”.
RedMonk analyst, James Governor, shared insights on how developers are key to driving innovation and how the shift to enable innovation through DevOps is a cultural movement. As fragmentation accelerates, a new approach is necessary. Agile and continuous integration are all but mandatory, and Open Source is no longer an option - it’s necessary to get what James calls that “DevOpsy goodness”. (I believe he’s coined a new phrase).
A move towards a DevOps culture can be scary. It sometimes requires breaking things to get breakthrough success, and it always requires an investment in people to augment developer’s skills. Truly embracing DevOps and becoming an agile organization requires commitment, but the payoff is huge.
