Accelerating Your Digital Transformation: Aligning LOB and IT Leaders around investments in software delivery capabilities
Over the last few years, I have had many discussions with Line of Business leaders as well as IT leaders on the mainframe side about the needs for improving how they develop software in context of Digital Transformations. Hybrid Cloud, Cognitive and Mobile technologies all require the support of agile, innovative applications that need to be developed, tested and deployed at the speed required by the business. We have also done a number of workshops with LOB and IT leaders where we discuss DevOps and API Economy practices in context of the Digital Transformations that companies go through. We have now synthesized the learnings from those discussions and workshops into a IBM Digital Transformation Model for IBM Z, which we think will help IT and LOBs to have more productive discussions around what software development capabilities are the most important for an organization to invest in to accelerate their Digital Transformation.
The framework divides applications into 4 layers based on business needs, see figure below.
There are only 3 questions you need to answer to determine which level you are at. We recommend that you answer those questions for the applications supporting one or several related Business Services within an LOB. For HR it could be the applications supporting Payroll and for Retail Banking it could be the applications supporting Consumer Loans.
Once you have decided what level the target set of applications should be at, we can easily determine what industry practices, software capabilities, organizational and architectural patterns are the most relevant for your organization to consider adopting.
