Continuous delivery of software-driven innovation will be a key focus at IBM Innovate 2014 . An enterprise capability for continuous software delivery can enable organizations to seize market opportunities, respond more rapidly to customer feedback, and balance speed, cost, quality and risk. With this in mind, we are delivering a robust DevOps for Enterprise Systems agenda at Innovate. These session were developed for architects, developers, testers and systems programmers. There are a number of practitioner and management... [More]
There are many ways to reuse assets, and although some of these ways may not be as efficient as others, it just makes sense to reuse work that has been previously done. Today, reuse of assets is commonly implemented in product lines.
Consider a product family such as a line of cars. There are S, SE, SEL and limited edition models. These closely related products share one or more common elements. The branches shown in the following diagram of a product line with variants branching off could represent the S, SE, SEL and... [More]
In my job, I routinely find myself talking with clients about using modeling to support their systems engineering activities. The discussion usually focuses on the challenges a team is having, and most of their difficulty can often be traced back to a lack of understanding of what modeling is. This is the same issue I saw many students struggling with when I taught introductory modeling classes. In this blog post, I will try to present modeling as simply a formalization of what we, as humans, do all the time: abstract. We do this without even... [More]
The IBM Impact general session this morning was all atwitter (social media joke) as attendees discussed the conference kickoff, before, during and after it occurred.
Tangerine Bank CEO, Peter Aceto laid out the company philosophy as well as the strategic partnership with IBM that has led to Tangerine's organizational and technological goals. Reducing deployment times to multiple, complex environments from several days to 30 minutes with IBM Pure Application Systems was certainly a measurable highlight.
Many clients ask me how they can scale basic enablement on IBM tools and practices to achieve a minimum core competency without a lot of investment. Sometimes this involves thousands of users or a few who only need a self-paced introduction with minimum impact. This is the first of a two-part blog post on IBM learning circles , which provide a great solution and add the benefit of social collaboration.

This week at Impact has been full of thought-provoking sessions and interactions with folks from IBM and attendees from companies around the world. The Expo floor was full of attendees asking about DevOps, and many folks specifically around the Release & Deploy pedestal were asking two recurring questions; one, "What is DevOps," and two, "Is deployment automation the same thing as DevOps?"
This misconception has come up more and more lately, as DevOps has grown in... [More]
"I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by."
Douglas Adams , author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy .
The need for speed in the development lifecycle of a product is no longer just desired; it is essential for organizations to remain competitive. While this approach breeds innovation, it also breeds terror of upcoming deadlines.
When I first started working in the telecommunications industry in the early 1990s, the... [More]

My career in modeling
Early in my career as an automotive engineer, I was exposed to modeling. Growing up I had often thought that I might go into modeling, but I had envisioned something completely different. Nonetheless, I was initially excited by the prospect of creating a graphical specification of a system.
Shortly after I started modeling, I was unfortunately introduced to the challenges of collaborating on a design. Even worse were the design reviews! Preparing for the review was a tedious... [More]
Today’s high-tech savvy consumers are much more demanding of quality—even for the most cutting-edge and high-tech electronic innovations. Automobiles, medical devices, mobile phones and electronics manufacturers all face the challenge of delivering the latest innovations to market (while trying to avoid getting blasted on social media because of poor quality). More than ever, test engineering teams for electronics manufacturers are on the frontlines trying to ensure the highest product quality for increasingly complex systems.

Everyone has a favorite meal that their mom prepares, right?
I really love my mom’s mushroom soup because she prepares it exactly the way I like it. My wife always tried to prepare it whenever I missed my mom, and I was very thankful for that. However, even though my wife used my mom’s recipe and the same ingredients, it just wasn’t my mom’s soup. I know she even called my mom to ask for some tips but it still didn’t taste the same! Finally, my wife and mom prepared the soup together and... [More]
