Last chance to register! The IBM Innovation Center Dallas will hold a hands-on workshop on IBM SPSS Modeler on December 4, 2013. You can register online for this free session. This full-day workshop will introduce IBM SPSS Modeler and show how to build predictive models in a variety of business scenarios.
Last week, I was privileged to be a member of a round table discussion on Business Analytics at the University of Texas at Dallas, along with executives from att.com and HCSC (Blue Cross Blue Shield in Texas.) We each did a short presentation to over sixty Masters students in business analytics, and then answered their questions. Beforehand, I had a chance to meet with some of the students who are using IBM SPSS Modeler in the classroom. I'd like to thank Dr. Eric Zheng for inviting me to participate.
IBM was unique on the panel in that we not only use analytics in our daily business processes, we also have a portfolio of big data and analytics applications to help others use analytics in their businesses. I briefly spoke about the shortage of analytics knowledge in the market today, and how the need for employees with analytics experience is growing. The U.S. Department of Labor forecasts that the number of analytics-based jobs will grow by more than 20 percent between now and 2018. These students are well-positioned for some of these new knowledge worker opportunities.
An interesting point for the students to consider - as important as basic statistical and analytics knowledge are, there are also many soft skills required, many of which will be job-specific. All the members of the panel emphasized that there are multiple skills areas required to complete an analytics project - data acquisition and cleansing, data warehousing, building and executing the models, generating reports and finally, presenting the reports. One of the most critical areas that drives all of these is domain knowledge - understanding the actual business processes and requirements that drive a specific customer. While the models may be similar (or even the same), what beer to stock is a much different question than how to save money on postage or when to replace a delivery truck. Also, the domain expert is the person who can actually determine what questions should be asked!
For all university students thinking about careers in big data and analytics, IBM recently announced the IBM Analytics Talent Assessment, a first-of-its-kind online platform that provides data-driven insights to help narrow the Big Data and Analytics skills gap and foster talent for the next-generation workforce.
The IBM Innovation Center Dallas also will hold a hands-on workshop on IBM SPSS Modeler on December 4, 2013. You can register online for this free session. This full-day workshop will introduce IBM SPSS Modeler and show how to build predictive models in a variety of business scenarios.

Two-thirds of our clients are seeking increased system utilization and reduction in costs. The IBM PureFlex System maximizes utilization and lowers costs by providing “no compromise” designs with fast computing, maximum memory, speed and choice in networking, comprehensive resource pooling and industry-leading systems management.
IBM Innovation Center Dallas recently hosted the IBM PureFlex Systems Expert Integrated Partner Tour – Connect to Win session. Over fifty IBM Business Partners and IBMers met together during this full-day event where they discussed new offerings and tools and resources available for PureFlex sales success.
IBM experts provided the partners with information on how
· IBM PureFlex systems allow business partners to rapidly deliver and deploy solutions with many options to their clients
· IBM PureFlex solutions are tied to large, fast-growing market opportunities that allow partners business to grow
· What tools and resources are available that can make their sales easier
The session included both sales and technical tracks. In addition to the North America Sales Team agenda, the Innovation Center's Cloud Enablement Team provided both groups with a Data Center Tour where they showed participants the PureFlex System used for Cloud engagements. The Innovation Center team also introduced the partners to the main features and functions of the PureFlex system, and how the entire system is managed through the IBM Flex System Manager (FSM). The technical track included a remote access demo of PureFlex FSM and its features. The Innovation Center team then showed the partners how to import and deploy virtual appliances through VMControl, and how to configure a virtual machine at deploy time. Finally, the team introduced the Image Construction and Composition Tool (ICCT), and demonstrated how they leverage ICCT to create the virtual appliance containing IBM middleware and any custom partner applications.
During this Connect to Win, all the attendees networked with their peers, learned more about IBM PureFlex systems, and also now have a better understanding about resources available to both technical and sales teams to support their businesses growth with IBM Pure Systems.

I'm the new team lead for Smarter Commerce at the IBM Innovation Center Dallas. I started reviewing the extensive list of products and solutions included in Smarter Commerce portfolio, but a more intuitive way for me to approach the problem was to try and visualize all of the interconnections along the path of a sale. All of the pathways can be automated, and almost every transaction can easily be tracked and analyzed. Every time there is an interconnect, there is a chance for someone to make money by optimizing the operation, and there is also a chance for someone to lose money by not being as effective as possible. Because of this, the Smarter Commerce ecosystem has many different actors.
As a customer, once you decide where your company needs help along the transaction trail, you can review the Smarter Commerce portfolio to see what technologies will help you at that point. For business partners and consultants, there are numerous places to help companies improve their existing business by automating and integrating their existing systems. Your knowledge of the portfolio combines with their knowledge of the business to complete a custom solution. For software vendors, you can extend the Smarter Commerce portfolio to build your solutions.
What does that really mean for us?
Need more information?
To see the solutions in the Smarter Commerce family, and begin to understand how your company can become part of the Smarter Commerce ecosystem, please join us at the IBM Innovation Center Dallas for an Introduction to Smarter Commerce workshop on December 3, 2013 from 1pm until 4pm. Attendees will gain an understanding of the IBM Smarter Commerce strategy and key software products, learn about the IBM resources available to help use, support, integrate and sell Smarter Commerce technologies, and meet IBM subject matter experts. You can register online. We hope to see you there!

Virtual: Self-paced Learning:
While many people assume the IBM Academic Initiative is limited to college students, there are also high school teachers that are taking advantage of the access to IBM courseware and software for use in the classroom. Highland Park High School in Dallas had a semester-long introduction to relational databases and DB2 concepts and facilities last Spring, and after many of the students were certified as DB2 Academic Associates, other Dallas Metroplex high schools began looking at the program, as well.
The IBM Innovation Center - Dallas is now working with other local high schools to bring the DB2 curriculum into their schools. The DB2 Academic Associate Certification program provides software (pre-installed on a VMware virtual machine), teacher presentations, video lectures and access to online materials to introduce the students to DB2 concepts and facilities and also prepare them to take the IBM certification exam. As students in the certification program, the certification exam is free.
The IBM Innovation Center - Dallas team looks forward to helping area high school students begin their journey towards certification this year!

The IBM Innovation Center - Dallas hosts annual programming camps for local area high school students, showing how to develop applications for both the desktop and Android Java environments, as well as web applications. This year, in addition to the programming camp, the team was issued a challenge by Dr. Thomas Fomby, the director of the Richard B. Johnson Center for Economic Studies at Southern Methodist University. Dr. Fomby wanted to teach high school AP Statistics students about predictive analytics using IBM SPSS Modeler, using the same summer camp format.
The staff at the IBM Innovation Center - Dallas, lead by Kevin Gilhooly, created a three-day workshop for students from the Dallas Independent School District's Townview Magnet Center. Twenty students received a two-day intensive introduction to IBM SPSS Modeler as well as presentations from SMU professors who are working with analytics and Big Data in their research.
After an overview of SPSS Modeler, the students broke into teams and each team was assigned a "real world" problem using data provided by SMU. The high school students found themselves acting as mortgage bankers, bond rating officers, direct marketing managers, insurance fraud specialists or used car salesmen, working on industry-specific questions using predictive modeling.
Update: SMU has also published an article on the camp. We thank them again for all their support.
