According to Gartner’s new research report, IBM is the worldwide market leader in flash storage solid state arrays (SSA’s) based on revenue for 2013.
Customers across the world are turning to IBM flash storage systems than any other company for faster access to insights from Big Data. IBM FlashSystem, the memory technology used in everything from mobile phones and tablet PCs to thumb drives, is taking the enterprise by storm; helping large and small businesses improve the performance of their applications as well as analytics in the era of Big Data.
The largest non-profit healthcare system in Southeast Texas, Memorial Hermann Health System, which includes 12 acute care hospitals, migrated from physical to Electronic Medical Records (EMR) from Cerner Corp. last year, to accelerate the sharing of patient information among medical staffs. This move radically improved efficiencies and created a swell of digital information that needed to be quickly accessed for analysis. And to do that, the company turned to the IBM FlashSystem 840 and SAN Volume Controller storage virtualization software, and the IBM Flex System x240 and saw a dramatic improvement in performance.
“By quickly processing the medical records of all patients across our hospitals in real-time, it enables us to detect patterns that indicate the onslaught of a bacterial infection that may lead to sepsis and take action within minutes—which can be the difference between life and death,” said Robert Murphy, M.D., Chief Medical Informatics Officer at Memorial Hermann.
As IBM FlashSystem has no spinning disks, it offers ultra-high performance, extremely low latency, and lower costs from energy savings. According to Memorial Hermann, the systems have helped the health system cut power consumption by 96 percent, physical storage space usage by 98 percent and cooling requirements by 95 percent.
Gartner, in its Market Share Analysis: SSDs and Solid-State Arrays, Worldwide report for 2013, published on June 10 2014 by Joseph Unsworth, identified IBM as the world leader with 25 percent of the Solid State Array (SSA) market share revenue. According to Jamie Thomas, General Manager, IBM Storage and Software Defined Systems, “Big Data provides tremendous opportunity for our global clients.” “As organizations look to gain business insight out of the building digital tsunami, more are turning to IBM flash storage as a key accelerator," she said.
IBM offers end-to-end flash solutions across its wide storage portfolio, including the IBM FlashSystem 840 and IBM FlashSystem V840 all-flash arrays, the DS8000 and Storwize V7000 families of advanced storage systems, that can be configured as all-disk, all-flash (Solid State Drives), or hybrid (disk and flash) systems. Container technologies are not a new concept; it has been around for a while. In this blog, I will take a closer look at Linux based containers like LXC and Docker, which are gaining momentum in the fast changing cloud landscape. Docker is built on open source container capabilities and encapsulates the application which runs in its own isolated process on the host operating system, a great feature for people concerned with cloud security. This has a potential for disruptive innovation in the cloud as it is very different from a traditional VM based model enabling acceleration of continuous delivery process and application isolation solutions.
It is important to note that, there is no guest operating system or a hyper visor in this model, and makes it a good fit for light weight applications , which needs to run on low resources , on edge nodes etc . These kind of container technologies can be applied to isolate applications that need to be provisioned in quickly like traditional sand boxing model for cyber threats and enabling portability across environments. The security and kernal integrity of Linux containers make Docker attractive in multile scenarios especially needing reduced memory foot print and fast startup. This is still an emerging technology and like any new technology, there are some gaps which are being worked as we speak, but has lot of promise to transform and evolve PaaS models like BlueMix where we can provision docker containers on bare metal servers in a hosted cloud environment and evolve the hybrid cloud eco system with interoprable docker containers. IBM Bluemix leverages Cloud Foundry to enable developers to rapidly build, deploy, and manage their cloud applications, while tapping a growing ecosystem of available services and runtime frameworks. Designed by developers for developers, IBM Bluemix accelerates application development and rapidly 'assemble' applications via composable services on an ease of use platform.
With the Bluemix platform being officially available as a commercial offering, it indeed was a start of good days in PaaS. PaaS is a service model where providers deliver infrastructure as well as middleware (databases, messaging engines, etc.) and solution stacks for application build, development and deploy. Bluemix a PaaS offering from IBM based on Cloud Foundry and IBM’s Open Cloud Architecture to build, deploy, manage and run multi-channel applications like web, mobile, big data and other smart services. Bluemix offers DevOps in the cloud. After selecting a range of open source technologies and back-ends, Bluemix provisions the entire environment in the cloud.
