Yes, good days in Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) have arrived! IBM recently announced that the Bluemix platform will now be officially available as a commercial offering. PaaS is a service model where providers deliver infrastructure as well as middleware (databases, messaging engines, etc.) and solution stacks for application build, development and deploy. Bluemix is a PaaS offering from IBM based on Cloud Foundry and IBM’s Open Cloud Architecture to build, deploy, manage and run multi-channel applications like web, mobile, big data and other smart services. Bluemix offers DevOps in the cloud. After selecting a range of open source technologies and back-ends, Bluemix provisions the entire environment in the cloud.

The IBM Software Defined Environments (SDE) team is working hard at an end-to-end infrastructure solution, and we were able to demo some great results at the Edge2014 conference held from May 19-23 in Las Vegas. During the conference, we were able to demonstrate some of the real-life SDE use cases that led the audiences to ask many insightful software-defined questions and brought huge excitement around this evolving technology. There is a lot of hoopla out there about the cloud, especially since dozens of startups have gone public over the last year or two, and many more are in the queue. Here are what I believe to be the top five cloud predictions for the coming years:
1. More application availability on the cloud
With most new software being built for cloud from the outset, it is predicted that by 2016 over a quarter of all applications (around 48 million) will be available on the cloud (Global Technology Outlook: Cloud 2014: A More Disruptive Phase).
This makes sense when you consider that about 56 percent of enterprises consider cloud to be a strategic differentiator, and approximately 58 percent of enterprises spend more than 10 percent of their annual budgets on cloud services. The Everest Group, in their recent Enterprise Cloud Adoption Survey, further argues that cloud adoption enables operational excellence and accelerated innovation.
2. Increased growth in the market for cloud
According to Gartner, the cloud is here, and it is accelerating globally. Based on their forecast for 2011-2017 , Gartner expects adoption to hit $250 billion by 2017. In the fourth quarter of 2013, we saw this prediction supported by enterprises worldwide—enterprises that were increasingly relying on cloud to develop, market and sell products, manage supply chains and more.

In the course of my field travels for IBM, I have heard Software Defined Storage referred to as “just marketing talk,” “a re-spin of old technology,” and “adding another layer of complexity to the cloud.”
In this short tech note, I will illustrate the key reasons why Software Defined Storage (SDS) is not only important for enterprise cloud infrastructures, but necessary for enabling:
Software Defined Storage – What is it?
To begin with a simple definition, Software Defined Storage is comprised of two distinct layers: the control plane and the data plane .
The first layer is control plane that provides a central point of intergration as well as common northbound APIs like REST. This layer also provides orchestration and automation tasks to the underlying data storage as requested by the cloud infrastructure. This can be tasks such as automated provisioning, policy management, tiering and monitoring.
The second layer is the data plane. This is a very large bucket which provides different types of storage such as NAS, object, and block storage. Along with the different storage devices, features and functions such as data protection, replication, snapshots and storage networking are key components of this plane.
