During our integrated launch in October 2013, IBM announced a new member of the Storwize family – Storwize V5000. This system inherited the virtualized nature of SVC and the rest of the family, enabling customers to start a new SDS environment. Storwize V5000 shares the software code and some of the most important capabilities available in the Storwize family, like thin provisioning, local copies, remote replication, dynamic migration, external virtualization, automated tiering and a very intuitive user interface. In these terms, both the Storwize V7000 and the V5000 can provide robust data services to implement SDS environments. The key differences between Storwize V5000 and other Storwize devices have to do with capacity, performance and flexibility to be configured. For example, the V7000 offers up to two petabytes of capacity with a number of software preferences -like automated tiering - included in the base price. The option to consolidate external storage systems is also available. In contrast, the V3700 was designed to consolidate small server environments. The Storwize V5000 capacity and performance lies between V3700 and V7000, and it offers several optional software capabilities to enable customers start with a small, affordable system and grow according to their needs. The V5000 can scale up to 672 terabytes of storage with two-way clustering (two controllers together with their respective expansions) and provides the option to integrate and manage external storage with external virtualization, which I mentioned is the foundation for an SDS environment. As stated by Barry Whyte in his blog, the Storwize V5000 is “really a powerful box for the cost, more than capable of saturating the maximum number of attachable drives, with plenty of horse-power left over for external virtualization if needed.” With a low entry price, this new system can be a great choice for customers who are looking for a powerful repository of information to implement solutions like ProtecTIER®, for efficient and reliable disaster recovery environments.
Storwize V5000 can also be a very good alternative for Mana
