IBM’s Software Defined Environment (SDE) is strengthening its portfolio with the introduction of Platform Resource Scheduler, a High Performance Computing (HPC) Scheduler Technology for OpenStack Cloud Management. As a resource-aware and workload-smart solution, IBM Platform Resource Scheduler is a key element of the IBM SDE portfolio, enabling dynamic allocation of infrastructure using intelligent resource scheduling. “After making a major commitment to OpenStack earlier last year, IBM is now beginning to layer on top of OpenStack a suite of management technologies that promise to make it easier to dynamically manage cloud computing at scale as part of a larger software-defined environment (SDE)” clarifies Jay Muelhoefer, director of strategy for IBM Platform Computing in his recent ITBusinessEdge article: IBM Invokes HPC Scheduler Technology to Enhance OpenStack.
IBM Platform Resource Scheduler brings an enterprise-class dynamic resource management that automatically optimizes resource utilization, reduces cost of cloud ownership and delivers higher workload quality through a comprehensive set of intelligent, policy-driven scheduling features. This new Platform Resource Scheduler is an extension to IBM’s SmartCloud Orchestration that leverages technology of IBM Platform Computing to simplify the management of cloud resources. By tying IBM Platform Resource Scheduler to its SmartCloud Orchestration software for OpenStack environments, the solution can dynamically allocate resources on demand across thousands of virtual and physical servers.
The Platform Resource Scheduler within an OpenStack deployment can choose the most appropriate server in which to place a new virtual machine based on policies crafted by the administrator. Criteria can include the number of times each machine is already being used in terms of its CPU utilization, memory utilization and other factors. The software will now be included in two service offerings: IBM's SmartCloud Entry and Smart Cloud Orchestrator to help organizations build their own private clouds. In the near future, IBM also plans to make IBM Platform Resource Scheduler an element of its IBM SmartCloud Entry self-service portal offering. IBM is dedicated to providing interoperability, agility and flexibility through a common cloud computing stack and has embraced OpenStack as an open foundation for IBM cloud management offerings. With IBM Platform Resource Scheduler, organizations can realize improved application performance and service levels while sharing infrastructure resources more effectively to reduce the total cost of ownership of OpenStack-based public or private cloud environments.
