IBM Edge2014 – The premier event for infrastructure innovation was a success!
More than 4,200 business and IT professionals from around the world gathered in, Las Vegas for this important IBM event. From the packed General Sessions to EdgeTalks...from WinningEdge and the Managed Service Providers (MSP) Forum...to more than 550 Technical Edge sessions… the conference served as an outstanding showcase for exciting new IT infrastructure breakthroughs and technology announcements related to Storage, x86 Systems and PureSystems.
Here’s a recap and some of the noteworthy content memorable moments and takeaways from Edge2014:
The conference kicked-off with an exclusive 2-day ExecutiveEdge event featuring a number of exciting sessions including 2 General Sessions and Edge Talks.
In EdgeTalks, the speakers focused on how innovative thinking in areas like healthcare, urban renewal and cybersecurity can result in unexpected extraordinary outcomes, while IBM Executive Host, Surjit Chana, CMO and Vice President Systems & Technology Group (STG), connected the dots and brought all the innovative ideas shared back to what it meant to the audience in terms of being creative about how they leverage IBM Infrastructure to help exploit the capabilities of evolving Cloud, Analytics, Mobile, Social and Security (CAMSS) technologies. This new Edge Talks format was a big hit with attendees, and served as a very effective inspirational approach to showing clients how daring to think differently and act differently can result in thought provoking, bold solutions. The Edge2014 General Sessions, expertly hosted by Stephen Leonard, General Manager Sales, IBM STG, focused on the What, Why and How Infrastructure Matters for Cloud, Analytics, Mobile, Social and Security. Each General Session presenter discussed some aspect of why and how IBM infrastructure serves as a best of breed enabler for CAMSS innovations. One of the key General Session themes that captured audience attention were new insights shared by Tom Rosamilia, Senior Vice President IBM STG, from the new IBM Institute of Business Value Study “IT Infrastructure Matters”. Tom highlighted the need for infrastructure readiness, and shed light on some business and organizational challenges faced by enterprises as they grapple with the new era of IT.
Technical Edge Sessions
Technical Edge offered participants an opportunity to learn from more than 550 technical sessions and hands-on lab, covering a range of topics impacting our industry from data efficiency to software defined environments. The sessions helped audience take deep insights and stay up-to-date on best practices within our industry as well as current issues.
Interestingly, throughout the general and technical sessions, new discussions were constantly sparked by professionals about the capabilities and versatility of using IBM infrastructure solutions. We made exciting announcements that are designed to help organizations create smarter infrastructures, capture opportunities driven by cloud, analytics, mobile and social technologies, and improve business performance. New and enhanced capabilities across IBM Storage portfolio including Storwize V7000 Unified, IBM XIV Cloud Storage, TS4500 Tape Library, IBM DS8870 Flash, etc. to optimize storage for large-scale cloud deployments through virtualization, real-time compression, easy-tiering and mirroring and provide clients fast access to information
Software Defined Storage for new workloads; codename: Elastic Storage - offers unprecedented performance, infinite scale, and is capable of reducing storage costs up to 90 percent by automatically moving data onto the most economical storage device
IBM Flex System x880 X6 eight-socket, x480 X6 four-socket, and x280 X6 two-socket compute nodes. Based on IBM's industry-leading X6 architecture for System x and PureSystems solutions, the new nodes include modular blade design that enables seamless scalability without "rip and replace" as analytic workloads increase; nearly 300 percent faster performance and resiliency features and virtualization tools that can help reduce the cost and complexity of system operation and administration
IBM PureFlex Solution for Parallels – MSP, designed to allow managed service providers to flexibly integrate Web, IaaS, SaaS, and core services for their clients quickly, efficiently and economically on the Parallels Automation software platform
IBM Cloud Manager with OpenStack - easy to deploy and use cloud software offering based on the OpenStack community project with IBM enhancements

Edge2014 Solution Center
The Solution Center, as always, demonstrated new technologies and IBM’s focus on providing innovative infrastructure based CAMSS offerings. Attendees got hands-on with the whole IBM Systems and Storage family displayed in the infrastructure Matters zone where networking with SMEs and colleagues helped generate many new leads and opportunities for new business.
Winning Edge, MSP Forum and Business Partner Forum
More than 400 IBM STG Specialty Business Partners and IBM Sellers gathered for an exclusive and concise sales education program at WinningEdge event. The event uncovered infrastructure opportunities within the hottest solution areas like cloud, analytics, mobile, social and more. There were some great awards that were also presented to IBM Business Partners and Sellers in recognition to their contributions.
The Business Partner and MSP Forums provided an opportunity to gain valuable insights on latest technologies, best practices, resources and contacts to help build their business. These venues reinforced the critical role of Business Partners and MSPs in IBM’s STG & Channel strategy.
The conference also included a fantastic social media program. All IBM Edge2014 attendees were invited to join in the Social Lounge near the registration desk in the show foyer to interact and share real-time experience by using #IBMEdge. Both our attendees and those who watched the conference via Livestream expressed huge excitement around Edge2014 making it among the top trends on Twitter with more than 52 million social impressions in just first 24 hours.
Overall, Edge2014 did a very effective job of delivering the POVs and messages that are so important to our strategy for success throughout the rest of 2014.
