I’m really excited about our StrongLoop announcement and I want to warmly welcome the gang to our IBM Family. With StrongLoop and IBM together, I have a message for the players in the API Economy… “You are about to experience Hyper-growth!”
This article attempts to back this bold statement, and why I feel so excited that IBM + StrongLoop will help ignite this fire. You see, no one company can fuel an economy. This is where I love what the StrongLoop's team has done. They have figured out how to harness the power of communities. Specifically, large and vibrant development communities like:
Open API Method - You start by designing your API. I like doing this in Swagger. You can import your Swagger document into StrongLoop Composer to iterate on its Model and to create a local Node.js-based implementation of your API. In minutes you have a Micr
Open API Platform - Together with StrongLoop, IBM now has the most comprehensive and Open API platform in the industry. It supports the FULL LIFECYCLE of APIs; Design, Discover, Assemble, Connect, Deploy, Scale and Manage. While this platform is “full”, it is also incremental, you only get what you need, thanks to NPM packaging.
Today's StrongLoop API Platform leads with open API composition in Swagger, Node.js and Express. The platform sets the industry benchmark for Enterprise Node.js by providing a complete set of deploy, scale, trace and monitoring capabilities.
IBM complements StrongLoop adding world class API
The StrongLoop API Platform is delivered through a variety of channels. Developers usually start by using NPM to download the platform to their laptop for local development (as they start the Open API Method of iterative API design). When their APIs are ready to go live, a developer (with their DevOps hat on) can deploy the platform to any end-user managed environment for production (a local environment or a rented cloud environment)... BTW, Node.js really “sings” on System Z Linux. :-) Now, I personally like the work we are doing to integrate the StrongLoop platform into Bluemix. Bluemix is well on it’s way to being the industries best PaaS for developing APIs and StrongLoop has just made that even better.
This is why I feel that the combination of StrongLoop + IBM creates the industries most comprehensive Open API Platform.
Given the incremental and lightweight aspects of our StrongLoop API Platform, we can bring (embed) API scripting capabilities into many of our existing enterprise offerings including WebSphere/Liberty, MobileFirst, Datapower, IIB, Portal, Commerce, Smarter Process, etc. I believe in the Java
Continuous Innovation - On the business side, it’s about the speed at which you can engage and delight users. Heck, my 20 year old son probably never stepped foot in a bank… but he does do banking using his smart-phone to snap photos of his paycheck to deposit. How does a bank rapidly engage new users like my son and at the same time continue to learn and improve their user experience? How quickly can you respond to his comments in the App Store or on Facebook? Do your new mobile apps have what it takes to change weekly? Daily? Does your IT team have the ability to react and respond in real-time?
Monolithic mobile apps and monolithic enterprise back-end systems are not going to give you the speed and agility to spin the app at the rate and pace of your customers feedback and insights. Microservices, which I define simply as a single tasked service represented by a RESTful API and implementation, is your ticket to speed and agility. Breaking your enterprise apps and teams into microservices and micro-teams are key to delivering multiple updates to your digital presence per day. With StrongLoop’s Open API platform represented by StrongLoop Arc used within a cloud-based development platform like Bluemix, an enterprise can apply the Open API Method to rapidly iterate on microservices from new or existing assets to build new engaging application and reuse and wrap existing IT assets at the speed required by new users of digital enterprise services, like my son.
Now, back to my prediction. I support my prediction on the logic presented above and the summary below:
With StrongLoop, we have a bold point-of-view on what it takes for a company to be a player in the expanding Open API Economy which is embodied in our open and complete API Platform and prescriptive Method for iteratively designing API-based solutions.
So, what are you waiting for? Give it a try and create your API using The StrongLoop API Platform on Bluemix today!
When you've created your API, please share your experience, tell us what your API does, and show us your Swagger by:
As you can see, this is why I’m so excited. Welcome StrongLoop! Wow! The Million API Jam is officially on!
