Build Docker on RHEL7.1 LE using IBM Advance Toolchain

Pradipta_Kumar 110000T0EC | | Visits (6065)

Currently if you are planning to use docker on RHEL 7.1 LE, then one of the option is to download pre-built binary by following the instructions mentioned here . The other option is to build from source. Building from source is the preferred option if you want to use the latest upstream docker features. Building from source is pretty straight forward and this article will provide the detailed steps. The primary tool-chain for building Go programs on Power platform is GCC-GO. This is available starting GCC version 5 onwards. While GCC 5 is not... [More]

Big Endian and Little Endian are data formats that define data in binary with the most significant bits in the high order (Big Endian) or low order (Little Endian).  Big Endian was the only data format for many years, supported by all systems and architectures.  Then x86 was “invented” and for some reason they reversed the data bit order and then we had Little Endian.  As it turns out only x86 is Little Endian but since x86 has the predominate market share, it is the most pervasive at this time.   There is a... The value of Open: Choice

jscheel 0600025BWM | | Visits (6464)

by Jeff Scheel, IBM Linux on Power Chief Engineer With LinuxCon North America upon us, I have been thinking a lot lately about the Power proposition of “open”. So, what? How does that help the Enterprise? My thought process around these questions flowed like this: open provides choice, choice enables flexibility, flexibility ensures greater efficiency in solutions, better solutions reduce expense. My conclusion: the Power System strategy around “open” ultimate saves customers money. As an engineer, I like logical... [More]

Blog:   Ron Gordon, Mainline Information Systems Title:  Supporting for Linux on Power Options As you begin to implement solutions on Power Systems with Linux, a key element of your planning has to be how to support the environment.   There are several aspects of support and usually we first think  of “how do I get fixes and updates”.   This is only a part of what you need to understand and plan for as you also need to address areas such as:  what can I do to insure the...   This is the second part in a series of articles on the topic: Using the IBM SDK for Linux on Power to improve the performance of a large open source project where I will be using the Migration Advisor . Here we continue exploring the performance of the PHP open source project by looking for the tell-tale signs of missing optimization for the POWER platform in the source.   The Migration Advisor (MA) looks for examples in the code where it uses Intel inline assembler or Intel-specific compiler built-ins. Using GRE with PowerKVM 2.1.1 – A Openstack Neutron Lab Simulation.

Using GRE with PowerKVM 2.1.1 – A Openstack Neutron Lab Simulation. Before we begin there are few things to note: 1. OpenVswitch can be configured both as a FLOW as well as a NORMAL switch. 2. By default every switch created using “add-br” is a NORMAL vswitch. 3. This is not a GRE tutorial but a hands-on lab to create a host to host GRE tunnel and prove that it works via Virtual Machine connectivity and requires the primary knowledge of GRE. Typical Openstack installations create 3 bridges – br-int/br-tun and br-ex. Each... [More]
