Janssen Healthcare has recently launched a medication reminder program / application called Care4Today. It tries to solve a very difficult problem of medication compliance for consumers / patients. The program uses secure messaging via smartphone applications to remind the user to take their medications. The program has some unique features such as using "code words" for reminders. And because the reminders are delivered via apps (as opposed to standard SMS), they can be encrypted.
But, the chief challenge in this space is to help the user keep track of medications in the first place. Many users do not know what medications they are supposed to take. And by asking patients to manually enter / maintain / update their prescription information as they change, it creates a big hurdle for people to use such programs.
