Well, well.... Dr Redshirt. When I learned that he was invited to the conference at Hursley I almost declined my invitation. But, the past is the past. Or is it...?
At any rate, I had committed to attend and didn't want to back out at the last minute. Also there was a nearby exhibition on the Atlantis artifacts I discovered underneath the town of Grimsby and I was required to speak. So all in all, the conference was quite convenient. I dreaded the possibility of running into Dr Redshirt, so I arrived early at Hursley House and got down to my preparations. I left fairly early in the afternoon so managed to avoid running into the bounder.
Thing is though, the possibility of meeting him made me re-examine our professional partnership. I remember back when we were still on the cusp of finding the lost city of Atlantis, when the breakthrough came. In fact it was our newcomer Dr Redshirt who provided the necessary leap in logic.
We had foolishly been looking underwater for the lost city of Atlantis. I remember when Dr Redshirt, his eyes glazed over with thought, put us straight, demonstrating his naturally brilliant aptitude for this line of work. He mumbled, "No, that's just where they would be expecting us to look", before scanning the map. "If I were the lost city of Atlantis, where would I go....? Hmmm... no one would ever think to look under Grimsby! I'd be safe there. No one would ever find me...", he muttered oddly.
Anyway, we started to dig under Grimsby and the rest is history. There it was in all its glory, the hidden underground city of Atlantis, and so we began our excavation and exploration, deep within the caverns under Grimsby. Dr Redshirt was a natural at that as well. He seemed to be very focused on exploring depths that even experienced underground adventurers feared to tread. He seemed to be running from some kind of deep trauma. Trying to get away from something that was eating away at his very soul.
On the upside, we made great progress. Dr Redshirt mapped out a huge portion of the underground city of Atlantis in only a few weeks. I have never before witnessed such a talent at underground exploration. But that's when it all started to go wrong.
While he was exploring one of the larger burial chambers in Atlantis, it became clear that we were not the first to discover the city... on more than one occasion, we discovered artifacts such as iPods, iPads, and Android tablets alongside a mass of high-tech gizmos such as smart watches and phones. Given this, we began to suspect that we may not be the first to tread the underground passageways, and that this might be the booty of a gang of thieves.
It was then that Doctor Redshirt heard the sound of voices echoing through the passageways. He suddenly stopped, and his demeanor changed. It was as if he had become a different person entirely. "I recognise that voice", he muttered. We all stopped and asked Doctor Redshirt what the matter was, and if there was anything he needed. "Revenge!", he cried. And with that he ran off in pursuit of the voice, carrying our supplies and our navigation equipment away with him.
With the disappearance of Doctor Redshirt, we were lost without food, water or a way to find our path back home. We waited for his return, but he never came back for us. It took us days to find our way out without our equipment. We had to survive on moss and underground pools of water for sustenance as we made our way out to the surface.
When we finally emerged, half-starved and mad with thirst, we discovered Dr Redshirt at the camp, sitting dejectedly upon our supplies. "I lost them" he declared, looking the very picture of despair. And despite the hardship we had endured at his hands, I could not help but feel a tiny glimmer of pity for him. I sat down next to my old colleague and put an arm around his shoulder. "You have let us all down Doctor Redshirt", I said, "now get out of our camp and never set foot in Atlantis again".
Incredibly, he looked even more distraught. "But if I am off the project, I will never be able to investigate the evidence in Atlantis and pursue them. These are the people that abducted me." he babbled. I replied firmly, "You put us all in danger. If I wasn't so malnourished I would not be held accountable for my actions. Leave immediately." With that, Dr Redshirt swore revenge upon me and disappeared off into the balmy Grimsby night. Even now, thinking about it, I'm not sure how I would react should I come across the bounder again. Still, I didn't, so everything is fine...
