Hello all and I hope you are having a great time at the 2009 Extreme Blue internship program.
It’s been a month now and we all are enjoying at IBM Pune in India. The Extreme Blue program started from 15th May 2009. First day was full of all joining formalities and presentations about IBM and its accomplishments in India. The company presentations were very informative, however knowing each other was even more fun. After being allocated to our respective mentors we all were introduced to our projects. The Pune TPO campus is mind blowing. The calm water fountain and the nice lawn make the place quite pleasant. My team was very eager and keen to work. I was amazed to see the knowledge of the technical interns who were from IITs and other premium universities in India. We attended the IBM customer exhibition roadshow where different clients are shown different new products of IBM. Some of the products were exceptional. It was there I witnessed why IBM is a leader in technology.
After a week we all had to prepare for the kick-off meeting with the VP Mr.Gopalkrishnan. All the interns worked hard to make their presentations unique and interesting. It was a valuable experience to know about different innovative projects at IBM and we all were excited to contribute towards the success of these projects.I was allocated to the “India Software Lab” in Pune, India. Our project comprised of four technical interns viz. Juzer, Gaurav, Rohit and Udit. The technical mentor for our project was Sivananthan Perumal (Siva) who is considered to be one of the best technical resources at IBM. It was great opportunity to work under him as we all could learn a lot from his insights and technical expertise. I was the business intern for the project and Mezjan Dallas and Mahesh Paradkar were my Business mentors.
In our project viz. “Contact Center Solution for Client” the client was losing significant revenue because of the inconsistent network connections during order taking. Another critical shortcoming for the client was its inability to track dispatched orders through multiple levels of transporters. This resulted in reduced customer satisfaction due to inability to ensure on-time deliveries and loss of potential customers who demand quick deliveries.
Hence, at IBM we had to implement offline capability with SAP to place orders and provide accurate real-time tracking of the dispatched orders. The client agreed to install GPS based vehicle tracking device in its trucks and IBM was going to provide the technology to integrate that location based data in the existing SAP system. Also, IBM was going to develop the ability to take orders offline and prevent the dependency on the internet connections. This was considered as a crucial factor providing sustainable competitive advantage for our client.
My mentors handed me all the rights to manage the projects effectively. I was given the opportunity to co-ordinate with the technical team, prepare action items and to do tasks and see that the project is on track. I believe that managing people is one of the most important skills to be developed and I was lucky to get hands on experience to handle the complete project management and learn from my experienced mentors.
Apart from handling the daily responsibilities of project management, I also had to investigate competition and market opportunity for repeatable sale of the solution. I had to explore the possibility of an inexpensive low cost dispatch tracking solution for Indian market. I interviewed different service providers, investigated different alternatives and found out true reasons for the problems faced in the vehicle tracking industry. Currently, I am conducting the complete market research for the product and how this can be used extensively in Indian market.
My first month at the Extreme Blue internship has been phenomenal. This internship has provided me with the perfect platform to exercise business concepts I learned in my MBA. I have understood the significance of technology in business and gained valuable insights about how IBM provides innovative solutions to resolve complex business problems for its customers. As I continue my internship I will keep you updated with my progress.
