Why “Linked Data” in a Service Management World

As new business services continue to expand into the scheme of dispersed capabilities which require connectivity and knowledge, data and how we use it will become essential to managing those services. That’s where “linked data” comes in. Using web standards like URIs, HTTP, and RDF, we can find, retrieve, and understand the structure and relationships of data. Of course, standards are required to enable this level of ubiquitous data access.
So let’s connect this back to the challenge of managing business services. In today’s world, we see a lot of effort integrating and consolidating data in one place using inconsistent interfaces. What we are trying to do is make it available when a problem arises or when we need it to understand the relationship of one component of a business service with another. To do this, we struggle with transforming and reconciling disparate to one place. Due to the challenges, complexity, and timing issues of consolidating data, the information is often incomplete and/or not current. With “linked data”, the focus is on dynamic real time information by leaving the data where it is and accessing it through web based standard interfaces.
It doesn’t matter if the data is in the cloud, on a local server, or a mobile device. Getting access to it for visualization and analytics in a consumable way is a game changer in the world of service management. Let’s go through a quick example. What if a customer opens a service request indicating that the services they are using to check inventory are running unusually slow? Given the name of the service, the support team might want to understand the configuration, the current workload, the current utilization, the maintenance level and any other recent changes. Using linked data, requests can be made in real time to visualize the most up to date information and analyze the cause of the slow down. Without linked data, you’re dependent on information gathered periodically which will probably be out of date and less useful to addressing the current situation.
