DWR appears to be for Java-minded folks -- basically an RPC mechanism for JavaScript to call Java (and now the reverse) Another popular and perhaps more flexible approach is to use JSON-RPC, which makes no assumptions about the backend and piggybacks on the popular JSON format.

The idea of server push or "comet" (see the link in the Ajaxian article to Alex Russell's blog) is leveraged here by DWR, but is really a separate concept, independent of DWR and RPCs in general.
