Creativity and collaboration help product development teams build better products. Group based games develop creativity and collaboration. This means the right games can help develop better product. This is the basic premise that agile game conferences like agile games 2013 which I attended last week.
During this conference developers there many different :games” played among participants, which were anyone from scrum masters to developers to architects, etc. I attended a session where we collaborated using legos to discuss how a participant’s company structure is setup and where the blockers are to change and ways to make those changes occurs. Legos also were used to build product requirements. The legos are a good resource to easily build up relationships on the fly.
In other sessions people used cards to prioritize their motivations to other attendees. These motivation cards include things like power, control, creativity, etc. This helped people express their goals better and also get feedback from people. In the end getting this type of stuff out in the open in a game setting helps teams work together better. There were so many different “games” that people could pick and choose and it was a great way to rejuvenate and be creativity. I think many of these games can energize teams to work together more effectively and come up with creative solutions. This is especially important in an a fast changing and competitive industry like electronics.
If anyone wants to comment feel free to do so. I also will be speaking at the Electronics Symposium in San Jose next week. Feel free to come by.
