First step is to find out the device mount point for the modem. For this i went to /dev directory and did an 'ls tty*' then plugged in the USB modem and did 'ls tty*'. /dev/ttyACM0 was new in the list so this must be the USB modem.
Second step is to edit /etc/wvdial.conf to
Modem = /dev/ttyACM0
Baud = 460800
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ISDN = 0
Modem Type = USB Modem
Phone = #777
Username = internet
Password = internet
stupid mode = 1
change to super user mode using 'su' and at the prompt run 'wvdial' it would dial and then connect to the net showing you the details of your IP address and other connection details.
