How z/OSMF Capacity Provisioning reports simplify your daily work

Some z/OS users may have pain points when working with reports about the status of the z/OS Capacity Provisioning Manager, this blog show you an easy and intuitive way to display reports.

The z/OSMF Capacity Provisioning (z/OSMF CP) provides a browser-based user interface for working with the Capacity Provisioning Manager on your z/OS system. With the z/OSMF CP, you can manage connections to a Provisioning Manager and use them to query various status reports, display the reports in a well-organized format.

While using the z/OS Provisioning Manager commands to request reports, you must remember those commands, their syntax and parameters. z/OSMF CP simplifies some of this work, reduces both programmer training time and the learning curve, you just need a few clicks.

How do you request reports from z/OSMF CP?

Domain Status Report

The Domain Status report displays the status of the Provisioning Manager and the domain that it has been configured to manage.

Without z/OSMF CP, to create a domain report, you need to issue a REPORT DOMAIN command to display the status of the current domain either in console or to a file, like this:

MODIFY CPOSERV,APPL=REPORT DOMAIN

or:

F CPOSERV,APPL=R D

Then you will get a domain report like this in the console:

With the z/OSMF CP, you simply go to the Performance menu on the left of the screen, select Capacity Provisioning, then Provisioning Manager link (the Provisioning Manager link will display existing connections to your Provisioning Manager), select one connection to the Provisioning Manager which you want to observe.

You will get the below Domain Status report, you can see it includes all the report data from the above console report, and the table is easier to read than the plain text.

Active Configuration Report

The Active Configuration report shows the status of the active Capacity Provisioning configuration, including the status of Central Processing Complexes (CPCs) and Systems.

Without z/OSMF CP, to create a domain configuration report, you need to issue a REPORT CONFIGURATION command:

MODIFY CPOSERV,APPL=REPORT CONFIGURATION

or:

F CPOSERV,APPL=R C

You will get a configuration report like this in the console:

With the z/OSMF CP, just click the Report dropdown menu you can access other Provisioning Manager reports.

Active Policy Report

The Active Policy report shows information about the active capacity provisioning policy, including policy scope and rules.

Without z/OSMF CP, to create a policy report, you need to issue a REPORT POLICY command, like this:

MODIFY CPOSERV,APPL=REPORT POLICY

or:

F CPOSERV,APPL=R P

You will get a policy report like this in the console:

Health Report

The health report contains information about the connectivity status and quality of data transfer with all managed CPCs and observed systems of your current domain configuration.

Without z/OSMF CP, to create a health report, issue a REPORT HEALTH command:

MODIFY CPOSERV,APPL=REPORT HEALTH

or:

F CPOSERV,APPL=R H

You will get a health report like this in the console:
