Hi all - this is the start of my unofficial, yet 100% confirmed accurate, FAQs. After all, what is any software offering without the infamous FAQs? And its only "unofficial" because there is no rhyme or reason to the order that you see here - other than its just how I thought to answer these questions. And you can expect that the list will probably continue to evolve in a similar manner (until it just becomes too unwieldy and then I'll be forced to do something about it).
If you have a question that I think everyone can benefit from knowing the answer, I'll add it to the list (and give you full credit for the genius it took to come up with the question). Just ask your question as a comment to this blog post, and I will do my best to answer you!
Q: When you say no charge trial... is it truly free? Is their a catch?
A: FREE! (well, we can't say "free" because we ask for your name and that's valuable info) but it doesn't cost you a penny, you don't have to give us your credit card #, there is no bait and switch at the end of your 90 day cloud trial. And for the development kit, there are no time bombs or limits to the features or functions.
Q: My 90 days in the cloud trial are up --- now what?
A: Any code you develop is yours... take it with you to a production IBM cloud or a IBM PureSystems appliance, we'll give you all the details on how to do this.
Q: I see the cloud trial offers Rational Collaborative Lifecycle Management development tools. Can I invite other developers to participate in my trial account?
A: You bet you can! In fact, we want you too!
Q: Do I need any special credentials to download the developer kit or try the cloud trial? If so, how do I request them?
A: You can use your existing developerWorks credentials. Not a member of developerWorks, join... its also FREE! The download or cloud trial request will also step you through the process of getting your credentials, its easy!
Q: Love your FAQ list (of course you do), but is there a place to ask technical questions or get support?
A: We have a team of developerWorks SMEs trained for this specifically. So for your technical inquires, post your question on our support forum. And if you have questions about the your request for a cloud trial account (or want to change the email you gave us) drop us a line at: email@example.com
Q: I love the cloud trial, does IBM offer an enterprise edition that my company or business can purchase?
A: Yes, of course. At the end of your 90 day trial (well at anytime, honestly), we can send you all the information you need to explore our IBM Smart Cloud Enterprise offering.
Q: Is the cloud trial open for all countries to participate in? How about the development kit download?
A: We are working fast to expand the cloud trial so there is a good chance your country is supported. Request an invite and we will notify you if your country is not eligible, and this puts your name on the list to notify as soon as support is available. The download is open to anyone, unless there is a particular software export restriction for your country.
Q: Is there instructional material to help me get started or give me ideas on cool things I can do in the cloud trial?
A: We prefer to not be that formal. So check out this blog, you will find projects created by our resident SMEs and we'll even leave you the code so you can try it out yourself.
Q: What if I lose track of time - do I get a warning before my trial is up?
A: You will be notified and given at least two weeks to save your work.
Q: What is a Promo code? Do I need one? How do I get one?
A: The Promo code is completely optional. From time to time our marketing folks dream up special promotions and hand em out at events, and such. You don't need one to get an account, but its always a bonus if you snag one.
Q: Is this IBM PureSystems?
A: The IBM developerWorks Cloud Trial includes elements of IBM PureSystems but is not exclusively just IBM PureSystems. The "Application Workload Service" service pattern is an element of IBM PureSystems. Once you provision that service pattern instance, you will be able to access IBM PureSystems patterns:
You can learn how to provision an "Application Workload Service" by watching the Creating an Application Workload service video. If you would like to know more about what is included in the trial, please visit the Try patterns of Expertise page.
Q: When I am provisioning instances, I see hourly rates for the instances. Will I be charged?
A: All of the users that are part of our 90 day dW Cloud Trial will not be charged for any activities. The environment that you are using is the IBM SmartCloud Enterprise platform that is used by paying customers. For this reason, this is why you see these prices listed for hourly rates even though you will not be charged for your usage.
Q: Who is eligible to participate in the 90 day no charge trial?
A: Anyone can participate in the IBM developerWorks Cloud Trial if they meet the following criteria:
