Malawi Bound and appropriate technology

The planning is done and we are getting ready to head to Malawi Africa to work with the local NGO "Somebody Cares" to teach some basic build techniques and hopefully build a building. I am looking forward to basically 'stepping back in time' to an era of human powered tools (which we are bring with us - THANK YOU to all who contributed towards this journey!!!). The thing that I am trying to stay focused on it the use of 'appropriate' technology - things that I can leave behind and positively affect the community after we come back home. One of the tools I am bringing is my grandfather's 'brace & bit' drills. As a kid I would use it in the woods behind my parents' house in New York. You could drill a hole through a tree fast and without electricity! My father sent it down to me. I was a bit sad about the thought of this tool leaving the family, but he said he could not remember the last time it was used, it was just taking up space. A tool is meant to be used and not mounted on a wall - what is it a trophy? It is very much 'appropriate' technology for where I am going! More to come....
