Almost everyone in IBM was excited about the launch of Smart SOA this week.
I thought of bringing in a very important trend of how the IT industry is moving from a labor intensive delivery model to asset based delivery model for services based offerings. Composite Business Services - Pre-built, adaptable packaged industry services and processes are taking a serious shape in the future trend of pluggable SOA.
A Composite Business Service (CBS) is a collection of business services to support an end to end complex business process, typically tuned and optimized for a specific industry. CBS solutions, built on the principles of IBM SOA Reference Architecture ( as shown in the figure below ) are aimed at making it easy for customers to adapt to an SOA environment quickly. Compliance to industry specific standards (amongst other business intents) accelerate the deployment of these solutions with new partners and customers.
A key challenge is to define the business requirements in a way to facilitate the discovery and composition of services within an enterprise. Hence each CBS solution should be specified by a structured business architecture. I intend to bring in more concepts around business architecture and application architecture specifications in my future blogs. This is something that we (Myself and my colleague Carl Osipov) spoke at IMPACT 2007 in Orlando, Florida this year.
