In today’s highly competitive ecommerce marketplace, everyone is looking for ways to reduce overall cost of ownership while increasing their ability drive new revenue opportunities. Over the last few years the term “cloud computing” has come into vogue, but does anyone really understand what it is? Here is a primer on the “cloud” – what it is and the implications for e-commerce.
The “cloud” is the blending of Software as a Service (SaaS), Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Grid Computing, and Pay For Consumption Computing into a single service. To put it another way, imagine that you have an e-commerce box. It should hold everything you need to house, maintain, and scale your site. The box contains servers, data center floor space, network bandwidth, applications, security, traffic management, etc. Now, imagine that the box can grow and shrink as needed to support the scalability of your business. That’s cloud computing in a nutshell.
So the next question is: What does it all mean to my business? Why should I care about the “cloud”? The answer is easy: Cost, flexibility and scalability.
