|During the week of IMPACT this year, we announced the launch of the WebSphere CloudBurst Samples Gallery. You can go to this gallery to find and download sample script packages, CLI scripts, and other tools that we hope help you in your endeavors with the appliance. The samples are free to use and offered in an "as-is" fashion.|
|While I certainly will not write about each and every sample we post out there, I did want to bring your awareness to a new one I just put up today. The new sample is neither a CLI script nor a script package, though you will find it in the script packages section of the gallery. Instead, the new sample is a tool that you can run to produce WebSphere CloudBurst script packages.|
|Specifically, the tool runs against a target WebSphere cell to produce a WebSphere CloudBurst script package that encapsulates that cell's configuration. The tool works by running the backupConfig command against the target cell. It packages the ZIP file that results from running the command into a special WebSphere CloudBurst script package that you can include in patterns which match the source cell in node quantity and type.|
|The script package produced by the tool packages logic to run the restoreConfig command using the backed up configuration from the source cell. This will apply the source configuration to a new WebSphere Application Server cell created as the result of deploying a pattern. In addition, the script package contains logic to handle the possibility of changing cell, node, and host names in the target environment.|
|The tool’s purpose is to help you accelerate the process of importing your existing WebSphere Application Server environments into the appliance as patterns (which is a problem I believe many of you would like to solve). It certainly does not handle everything you need to do to import environments. In fact, it has the same limitations as the backupConfig/restoreConfig utilities in WebSphere Application Server. However, I do believe that it makes it a little easier to start moving your existing environments into the appliance as new WebSphere CloudBurst patterns.|

Acting on announced intentions, IBM WebSphere made the WebSphere Application Server available as an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) on the Amazon EC2 cloud earlier today. The AMI is offered under a development license, so users can try it out with very little cost (only paying EC2 usage charges). This AMI provides users with easy, low-cost access to the fully compliant J2EE application server environment. Users can use this environment as a sandbox for testing and prototyping traditional J2EE applications without making any specific coding allowances in such applications just because they are running in a cloud environment.
I particularly like the way the AMI is configured on startup. After activating an instance, users are supplied with both a single server instance and an administrative agent connected to that single server instance. The administrative agent is a new profile type introduced in WebSphere Application Server 7.0 that allows users to monitor single server installations. This provides a central administration point for what would otherwise be a disparate set of nodes.
In addition to providing the WebSphere Application Server pre-configured and ready to run on EC2, users can also utilize a simple script to create a more customized AMI. For instance, suppose a user activated the standard AMI and then installed custom applications into the WebSphere Application Server environment. Upon making those customizations, the user could create a new AMI that packages not only the WebSphere Application Server, but also their custom applications. The user could then turn around and launch their new AMI, and when activated the WebSphere Application Server environment would also contain their custom applications.
The availability of the WebSphere Application Server as an AMI on Amazon's EC2 complements the recently announced WebSphere Application Server for Developers edition very nicely. They both provide low-cost, low-risk ways for users to experiment with the robust WebSphere Application Server environment. I'm going a little off-topic here as this has nothing much to do with cloud computing, but I thought this was definitely worth a mention. Just recently, IBM announced the new WebSphere Application Server for Developers edition.
This new edition of the WebSphere Application Server product is a completely FREE version of the application server that allows developers to download, install, and use the product on their personal machines. It is the same code base as the production version of the WebSphere Application Server, thus providing developers with an environment in which to unit test with confidence that their applications will run unchanged in the production environment.
Further, users can install free feature packs on this version just as they do with other WebSphere Application Server versions. If users have questions or problems using the WebSphere Application Server for Developers edition, they can use the same forums used for existing WebSphere Application Server offerings.
I'd encourage anyone interested to download the WebSphere Application Server for Developers edition. It's worth a look, after all it's free!
