A common problem with the SNMP probe (nco_p_mttrapd) is that the hostname resolution lookups (which are done synchronously and in a blocking way) can often take a long time to be performed, this makes the probe get behind as it is spending a disproportionate amount of time performing hostname lookups (often via DNS) rather than processing alerts. The standard workaround, albeit not ideal, is to disable hostname resolution in the probe (NoNameResolution property) and then handle name resolution either with static lookup files in the rules file,... In database, helpdesk and other Netcool OMNIbus gateways, there is no peer-to-peer functionality available for a master and slave gateway configuration as in probes. There is no officially supported method for gateway primary and secondary failover/failback and high availability. Instead, a highly available gateway is typically configured using a cold standby method. A cold standby gateway will run only when the primary gateway is down.
