When a US mobile CSP wanted a new Operations Support System as part of its investment in LTE, it first spoke to the key company personnel who are on the front lines in delivering value for their customers.
The customer service help desk folks want better location based network topology information. This would enable them to leverage the network geographical view in order to give them better understanding of the localized impact of network outages and to provide assurance to customers that their service would be resumed with the minimum of down-time.
The folks in the inventory management department were tired of dealing with unreliable inventory data that was not in synch with the actual network deployed, due to the manual data entry process. They demanded an automated process for data entry into the inventory management system, based on what is actually deployed in the network and what is stored in third party systems. They also demanded that process would keep in synch with network changes and updates.
The IBM Netcool Network Management for LTE solution successfully meets these customer requirements. The network discovery process, now extended to include the LTE network, regularly delivers an up-to-date, enriched network topology view to the help desk system, which is based on Smart Cloud Control Desk, and enables the help desk personnel to manage customer engagements and network outages more effectively.
The inventory system is now populated with up-to-date inventory data, based on daily discoveries. The inventory system is now recognized as being a reliable asset view of the actual network deployed and can be effectively leveraged for network planning and other business processes.
The Network Management for LTE solution leverages the common LTE model so that the participating products, which includes IBM Tivoli Network Manager and IBM Smart Cloud Control Desk and can easily share topology data. Note that the solution also has the ability to include in the topology model both custom network extensions and non-network attributes. This flexibility ensures that the consumers of the data, both at the help desk and inventory management have all of the network details they need to do their job effectively.
