Changing Netcool OMNIbus ObjectServer properties without a GUI

I just wanted to write a quick blog post about how to change ObjectServer properties without needing to use the nco_config GUI. When changing the properties in this way they alter the current setting and update the properties file, so restarting the ObjectServer is not required.
To do this without a GUI we of course need to use nco_sql. For example run:
You will then be prompted to enter the user password, and if successfully you will get the following prompt.
Before changing a property value it's best to first check it's current value. The values are stored in the system catalog.properties table.
Note: You can view the information in this system table, but you cannot modify this table directly.
So to check the current value of the ObjectServer logging level you would run.
1> select Value from catalog.properties where PropName = 'MessageLevel';
This would then return for example:
For more details about the catalog.properties table see the infocenter docs here
As mentioned we cannot update this table directly, so we need to use the “alter system set” command. So for example to change the ObjectServer logging level to a debug level of logging the command would be:
1> alter system set 'MessageLevel' = 'debug';
(0 rows affected)
This would then immediately update the running ObjectServer logging level and update the ObjectServer properties file. As the ObjectServer properties file is updated the property update will be maintained after an ObjectServer restart.
