ITNM Calculator for system sizing and polled data storage

A spreadsheet has been added to the IBM Community for IBM Tivoli Network Manager.  It is designed to help you with initial sizing plans for your Network Manager 4.2 system.  It takes in the major contributors to the system resources and will give you a good idea of the RAM, CPU, and disk space required for the Network Manager core server, database, and GUI.  It also helps you calculate the estimated polling load for storage purposes and the resources required.

1. Hardware sizing guide
This sizing guide is suitable for use for ITNM.4.2 linux 64bit sizings using DB2 database for small and medium sized enterprise clients. This would typically include non-Telecom clients with total number of entities less than 2,000,000. For larger complex deployments, contact IBM for assistance with the sizing.

2. Polled data storage guide
 Use this tool to calculate the number of pollers required to implement the polling policies based on,
 a) number of devices and interfaces,
 b) number of poll policies scheduled,
 c) frequency of each poll policy

This tool produces an estimate of the insert rate per hour and the number of rows produced for each of the Poll Data Raw and Aggregation tables. The tool also produces the number of poller processes which need to be deployed to scale to this workload. This can be used as a guide to ensure plans are within scalable limits.

The current scalable limit is an insert rate of 20 million rows / hour (see the raw POLLDATA table which holds one hour of data), and 200 million rows for each of the aggregated tables(pdEWMAFor* tables)

3. Estimate the number of discoverable entities
To help you determine the approximate number of entities that would be discovered for the network to be managed, a separate page lists the average and maximum entities typically seen on a range of network devices.
