Converting your RTC Scrum Projects to the 4.x Agile ALM Scrum Template (Part 1)
At or around Innovate 2013, IBM released a new Agile ALM Scrum process template for RTC. The Agile ALM Scrum template is based on the Scrum template, with modifications promising better support for Agile Planning with Scrum . After reviewing the new template, I became interested in morphing a Scrum-based project to the Agile ALM Scrum definitions. My first step was to create a summary of the differences between the two templates. (Thank you to the template authors for their help in finding and understanding these changes.)... [More]

Controversy around SAFe, DAD and Enterprise Scrum
Recently, Ken Schwaber--an Agile thought leader, co-creator of Scrum and someone I think very highly of--posted a controversial blog entry " unS AFe at A ny S pee d " during Agile2013. During my career as an agile transformation consultant, I have had the opportunity to work with Ken, Dean Leffingwell of SAFe and both Scott Ambler and Mark Lines of Disc ipli ned Agil e De live r y . I have studied their histories, intensely reviewed their current approaches beginning in 2007 and... [More]

Agile2013 It's All About the Context
One of the things that I enjoy most about conferences like Agile2013 is the opportunity to hear different perspectives. It reinforces that a practice that one team deems critical may be utterly unhelpful to another team working in a different context. Two people were discussing why there might be so much demand for a session on negotiation: One took the need for negotiation skills to be a "smell"...that perhaps the team was having issues due to not delivering value on a cadence. Or, perhaps the team had very long cycles that caused... [More]

High Level Discussion of IBM's Agile With Discipline (AWD)
During my career, I have used many Agile methods/processes. IBM’s Agile with Discipline (AWD) happens to be one of them; therefore, I would be remiss if I did not share my experiences learning and using it. I first stumbled upon AWD in 2008 while evaluating a Scrum implementation for a major telecommunications company. I heard the company had, at one time, considered AWD and then decided to hire another company that used Scrum. As I was an IBM employee and this was an IBM offering, my already inquisitive nature was definitely... [More]

Innovate 2013: Notes from the Zone.... the Agile Transformation Zone...
The Zone had an early morning skip level meeting.... more like skip three levels to kick off the day.... to start off a rockin' day. It is with profound gratitude that the Zone wishes to thank Dennis Schultz of IBM Rational Unleash the Labs. Dennis took time in his busy schedule to meet with one of the Zone's clients to walk through Rational Functional Tester. The session was highly educational for the client. It cleared up one of the architectural hurdles they face in implementing an improved Requirements->Test... [More]

Innovate 2013: Notes from the Zone (Agile Transformation Zone)
Today was a busy day for the Zone. 1) A client arrived at the Zone with an agile planning conundrum. It seemed that the development cycle time of two different types of software (two different languages) we so incompatible that the best the team could do sprint length wise was in the order of months. Upon review, it turned out that the client needed finer grained impact analysis between the two sets of software. When this could be understood, assessment of the difficulty (read story points) would be more accurate. ... [More]
