Relationships of trust and understanding within your own business are crucial to every success. You may have relationships with key players from your in-house departments who play a part in the full cycle of your service delivery or product offering. Maybe your business relies on external suppliers to advise you of product choices, changes with demand, or best route to market. Your IBM software investment is no different! In fact, as a foundation to your business processes and the interface to your customers, it could be the most important asset for which you need an experienced guide to work alongside.
IBM Accelerated Value Leaders (AVLs), are Trusted Advisors and client advocates who work with their assigned customers to learn about their businesses, their challenges, their infrastructures, and their goals. AVLs are seen as virtual members of the customer's team, but with many additional advantages! As a single point of contact, they are the customer's voice inside IBM, and they have a direct relationship with the IBM resources that can make a huge positive difference to customer's business changing decisions.
"When should we upgrade? What is our longer-term strategy? How can we meet our business needs? How can we reduce our costs? What tools can we deploy to speed up performance? What should we be looking at to reduce time to market? How do we minimize risk? Is there a faster route to resolving issues? How can we adopt new technologies quickly?" ... and more... much more.
AVLs are the nucleus of IBM's Software Accelerated Value Program, providing a valuable service by working alongside their customers, expertly steering projects (such as software migrations) to successful and profitable conclusions, providing crucial knowledge transfer along the way. When is comes to issue management (PMRs), Accelerated Value Program clients receive priority call handling. However, as prevention is more efficient than cure, customers with this Program will benefit significantly from the AVL's proactive problem prevention element of the offering.
Many of the top businesses across industries engage this essential IBM service, so if you are interested to learn more, why not check out the IBM web page (http://www.ibm.com/software/support/acceleratedvalue) or contact The IBM Software Accelerated Value Program directly: firstname.lastname@example.org

It's an exciting time for Service Management Connect
(SMC), with multiple improvements on the horizon. The SMC development team is working on a complete redesign of the community, with the launch scheduled for Pulse in a few weeks. So if you're heading to Las Vegas for the conference, the unveiling of "SMC Next" will be a nice opening act for Grammy Award winning recording artist Carrie Underwood. Don't miss your opportunity to see the new site, which is placing a greater emphasis on our development projects that are developing transparently, providing open access to release plans, roadmaps, and continuous open betas.
There are three demos spaces in the Solution Expo for you to view the new site, so please stop by! Also don't miss the Meet the Experts session, during which you can learn more about which products are developing transparently.
In addition to the site makeover, we're migrating our social platform next week, February 11-15. We're excited to migrate to the new IBM Connections 4.0 platform, which will move all of our collaboration assets (blogs, forums, groups, and wikis) to the same platform. Please note that during this migration, these social assets will be in read-only mode so that we can have static data to migrate. You will still have access to read blogs, best practices in product wikis, and discussions in our product forums, but editing and content creation capabilities will be disabled while we migrate. Editing and content creation capabilities are scheduled to resume February 18. We apologize in advance for the inconvenience.
We're always interested in your thoughts on the SMC community. Don't hesitate to send any feedback to email@example.com. Thanks for your participation in SMC, and we look forward to unveiling the new site.
When Tivoli launched its transparent development process this year, there was a goal of making ten of our projects fully transparent. And by fully transparent, we mean that these projects are making key development artifacts available in the open. These artifacts include the following:
- Release plans, and individual work items from within the release
- Development milestone schedules
- Product roadmaps
- Early designs
- Beta downloads
With the recent launch of three new development projects, we have reached our goal, and there are plans to make several more projects transparent before the end of 2012. Here are the latest projects to adopt transparent development on Service Management Connect: Tivoli Application Dependency Discovery Manager (TADDM)
: TADDM delivers automated discovery and configuration tracking capabilities to
build application maps that provide real-time visibility into application complexity. Tivoli Netcool/Impact
: Tivoli Netcool/Impact streamlines event and alert management, business service management, and
incident and problem management
processes by enabling context-driven correlation, providing real-time
access to actionable intelligence, and improving efficiency
through automation. TPAE/Maximo Multi-tenancy
: Tivoli Process Automation Engine, or TPAE, is the base platform on which
several Tivoli products are based including Maximo Asset Management and
SmartCloud Control Desk. This project is focused on implementing a
multi-tenant architecture to increase the flexibility for
implementations and lower
the cost of ownership for the asset and service management offerings
based on this platform.
All that is required to access these development projects is a developerWorks ID and password. We are opening development for these projects so that more clients and business partners can provide ongoing feedback throughout the development cycle. To access all transparent development projects, click here
We recently added a new technical library to Service Management Connect
. The purpose of the technical library is to provide our users with professionally written technical articles to assist our users with the implementation and usage of our products. The most recent article published describes how to use Tivoli Storage Manager to back up and recover a DB2 database. Here's the overview of what you'll find in that article:
IBM Tivoli Storage Manager is a software product that addresses
the challenges of complex storage management across distributed
environments. This product protects and manages a broad range of data, from the
workstation to the corporate server environment. IBM DB2 is a family of
relational database management system (RDBMS) products. The DB2 database
includes a data dictionary or a set of system tables that describe the
logical and physical structure of the data. DB2 provides self-tuning
capabilities, and dynamic adjustment and tuning.
This article first reviews concepts and considerations. It
explains how to install and configure the Tivoli Storage Manager
backup-archive client, and provides step-by-step instructions and
techniques that show you how to back up and restore data on a Tivoli
Storage Manager server for the DB2 database.

In getting ready for Pulse 2013 and I've been talking with folks from different IBM teams who will be at the conference on March 3 through March 6.
The IBM software Accelerated Value Program team hosts exclusive events for its clients at Pulse, including the Red Carpet Lounge - and I am intrigued to learn more about who attends, and just what goes on in this vibrant area which 'buzzes' in the Expo each year!
So I caught up with Maria ("Mary") Tafuri, Worldwide Program Director of the IBM Software Accelerated Value Program for IBM Tivoli Software, for a recap on what the IBM Software Accelerated Value Program is about and what her team will have going on at Pulse this year.
By way of introduction, Mary has been Tivoli Accelerated Value Program Director since early 2010. She joined IBM in 1996, and has extensive experience in the areas of customer and product support, strategy planning, and business model initiatives. Mary also has worked as an IBM manager in a number of different countries and with many international clients, experience which serves her well in her current worldwide role.
Can you give me a quick refresher on the IBM Software Accelerated Value Program?
Mary: I'd be glad to! The IBM Software Accelerated Value Program is a technical advisory service that complements and enhances IBM's standard Subscription and Support. The program matches clients with an IBM Accelerated Value team of experts who through a trusted long term partnership, deliver ongoing services of value and excellence. On-site assistance, best-practice sharing, skill-building activities, deployment planning assistance, problem prevention, and diagnostic coaching -- all are examples of how we maximize the client's software investment at all stages of the software life cycle. The Accelerated Value Program's does exactly what it says, opening up the channels that help clients accelerate from software purchase to software return-on-investment.
What will the IBM Accelerated Value Program have going on this year at Pulse?
Mary:Well in 2013, we have a number of exciting events planned! First, we'll have our Accelerated Value Program Red Carpet Lounge located in the Solution Expo hall, where Accelerated Value clients can relax and check e-mail between sessions, and network with other AVP customers. To kick off our client's Pulse experience, we have invited our clients to the lounge for VIP opening night cocktails on Sunday, March 3rd from 6:30 to 9:00 PM. For customers who do not currently have Accelerated Value, our doors are open for you too! We have Accelerated Value Managers, Executives and team members available throughout the day in the lounge to hold interactive discussions on either our predefined subject matters, or if preferred, topics of the customer's choice. This year, we have made it much easier for customers to drop by the lounge during a convenient gap in their day's schedule, as discussions are 'on demand' and at the customer's convenience.
I encourage all of our Tivoli customers to take this opportunity to find out more about Accelerated Value, and they will soon learn why over 90% of our customers worldwide renew their Accelerated Value Program contract year on year - despite the financially challenged climate we live in today!
That's a quite amazing contract renewal rate in what is, as you say, a tough financial climate. What's your secret?
Mary: Quite simply value! Customers not only want to see value from their software purchase, they want [and need] to see it quickly! Accelerated Value helps its customers to work smarter, leverage the right product features to achieve their business goals, and avoid time consuming technical issues. Accelerated Value provides all this consistently over long periods of time, accumulating value upon value.
You must regard your AVP customers as very special to provide the 'Red Carpet' treatment,
Mary: Yes, 'special' is a very good way to describe the trusted and long term relationship we have with our customers!
How can IBM customers learn more about the Accelerated Value Program?
Mary: Apart from visiting the Red Carpet Lounge, customers can learn more by visiting the IBM Software Accelerated Value Program Web site at www.ibm.com/software/support/acceleratedvalue
I am also happy to receive any enquiries personally and can be contact at firstname.lastname@example.org. Alternatively, customers can e-mail us at email@example.com.
Thank you for your time
Mary: You're welcome, and see you at Pulse!

IBM Software Subscription and Support (formerly software maintenance), is an affordable and renewable product upgrade and technical support solution, available for the IBM-distributed software licences you have purchased. Subscription and Support gives you access to new releases and versions of your licensed IBM Software, online technical support, enhanced self-help and search capabilities, and assistance with problem resolution by phone for all Severity 1 situations.
Great! That's a world class service from a world class company!
IBM offers two license acquisition and Software Subscription and Support offerings— Passport Advantage, and Passport Advantage Express. Passport Advantage is designed for larger enterprises. Passport Advantage Express is designed to meet the needs of medium sized businesses. You can learn more about each here.
So, let's say you are ready to upgrade your Cloud & Smarter Infrastructure software, and you have Subscription and Support in place. You login with your IBM ID to Passport Advantage Online and there you see the software you need, ready to be downloaded. Sure there could be a few teething problems while upgrading, and then quite possibly some issues to attend to after the go live date. Having IBM Subscription and Support means you can log these incidents (PMRs) through phone and online technical support using IBM's Service Request system.
Sounds pretty standard as far as support goes? Yes, this is standard support and is an excellent IBM service. But did you know that by having Subscription and Support in place, you can get an even more advanced support and risk avoidance service from IBM? You sure can! Reactive support is critical when you need expert help to address an issue that is affecting your bottom line - you need a resolution as quick as is possible! But if you want those issues handled as priority by IBM to get your environment back to maximum capacity rapidly, and would like an assigned IBM trusted advisor managing and escalating such issues on your behalf, you need to explore IBM's Software Accelerated Value Program (AVP).
Reactive support is one small element of this popular program as the ultimate objective is to prevent issues in the first place. If you think your environment is fine tuned and you are using all of the functionality of your IBM software to the max, these guys will check it out and most likely find even more efficient ways for you to work with your software. These highly skilled experts are awesome! And if you haven't looked at how you are using you C&SI software lately, or how it is implemented in your ever evolving environment, you could be amazed at how much you could bring down your operational running costs. AVP is much more than support, it gives you a relationship with IBM, someone to fight your corner. The AVP team will also help you to plan for upgrades so you don't encounter frustrating issues, and will help your employees to adopt the most current release of software. Your trusted advisor will even work side-by-side with you to help grow your skills too.
Why not check out what the Accelerated Value Program could do for you by visiting the Accelerated Value Program web page here, or if you prefer, contact the Accelerated Value Program team at firstname.lastname@example.org
Last week I blogged about our migration to IBM Connections 4.0 for Service Management Connect
(SMC), which was originally scheduled for this week. The developerWorks team has put that migration on hold for the time being, so all SMC functions are available this week. We will keep you updated on the status of the migration.
When the migration begins, all edit options will be disabled, though you will have access to the all content in read-only mode. To read more about what's ahead with IBM Connections 4.0, click here
Over the past two years, we've seen engagement grow within the Service Management Connect
(SMC) community. As our community grows, we plan to evolve what we provide our community of service management practitioners, from the content to the platform on which it is hosted.
The next big change you will see on SMC is with our social platform. We're excited to migrate to the new IBM Connections 4.0, which will be available April 16. This new platform will provide additional capabilities, and will streamline all of our social assets into one environment. We believe this will be an upgrade to our overall user experience. As we migrate, we'll have to hit the pause button on some activities in order to move all of our data over. Here are some important details about the move:
- April 6 (9 PM EST) all product forums will move to read-only mode. You'll still be able to view previously asked/answered questions, but contributing to the forum will be disabled.
- April 12 (5 PM EST) - April 14 SMC, and all of developerWorks, will be in maintenance mode. During this time, the site will be completely unavailable.
- April 15 (9 AM EST) SMC is available again.
We apologize for any inconvenience our migration might cause, and we're always interested in your thoughts about the SMC community. Don't hesitate to send any feedback to email@example.com. Thanks for your participation in SMC, and we look forward to unveiling our new social platform.
