Crisis management is generally a costly business. Switching gears away from your forward-thinking strategy and pulling in resource to deal with issues not on the radar can really stymie growth and efficiency. Especially in the IT management space. In the past, the role of the IT manager was largely reactive: as soon as a problem occurs, they would have to jump in and manage the crisis. This was, and continues to be, a costly exercise for IT departments - often costing organizations millions of dollars annually. Investment in predictive... [More]
In my previous life as a webmaster I was called on to develop monthly web performance reports for consumption by the whole marketing organization. At one time these had been documents that were mailed around, but we decided the best approach was to build a web interface with charts and diagrams that would be updated monthly.
We showed standard metrics. Stuff like this:
Each month I'd send out an email with a link to the latest report with my notes on site performance each month. For instance, I'd point out from looking at the... [More]
The big news today from the IBM IOD Global Conference and Business Analytics forum is the unveiling of Cognos 10 .
The most common feature brought up on news sites and blogs is the ability Cognos 10 opens up to access business intelligence on a mobile device: be it a Blackberry, iPad or iPhone. Bloomberg picks up on a case study from the car rental industry :
"Hertz Global Holdings Inc., the largest car-rental company, will gather survey data from customers via text messages, and use IBM’s software to analyze responses. Employees... [More]
Wanted to post responses to some of the questions from the webinar today, and follow up on those from last month.
First off, a huge thanks to everyone who took the time to attend (especially to those far from this timezone), and also, thanks for the compliments and support - though I'm not sure my ego will fit in my cubicle now
Now to the questions:
"Where can I find the recording for this session, previous session, etc...?"
Many questions about the first session, and about getting recordings of that - Tim is on... [More]
Sales & Operations Planning
This is the process where future supply and demand requirements are collaboratively compiled and readied for review to ensure the organization's prepared for what's to come. Most organizations are effective at this as a stand alone activity. The problem is the missed advantages that can be gained by fully aligning the S&OP with the financial plan. Doing this results in greater corporate alignment, improved information transparency, and more timely and effective organizational... [More]
Currently, our external reporting requirements here in America are based upon Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, or GAAP, designed to reveal important information about companies that dominated the landscape when GAAP was developed in the early 20th century. Railroads, auto makers and manufacturing enterprises dominated the U.S. economy at that time. These builders were from the old school industrialized economy model where their company's value was inherently based upon the assets on their balance sheet. These assets... [More]
At IBM’s 2013 Business A nalytics Forum beginning this week, there are tracks and sessions across the entire Business Analytics software portfolio in which I hope you’re participating.
Because the AnalyticsZone has a Predictive Analytics-focused community and a related software download – SPSS Statistics – as well as a demo sandbox of IBM SPSS Analytic Catalyst I want to especially highlight these IBM SPSS-related sessions. Yes, these IBM SPSS Statistics and IBM SPSS Analytic Catalyst sessions, including name,... [More]
Books. There's all genres. Business. Nonfiction, Fiction, History, Current Events, Biographies, Mysteries and on and on. Whatever the genre there's nothing like a great book. They can entertain you, inform you of information you'd otherwise never know, challenge your thinking, and even change your life. Many people like to read so much that they'll take on multiple books at a time each serving a different purpose: one, current events; another, fiction; a third, history; a fourth, humor, etc. I... The power of personally-assigned key performance indicators, or KPIs, is tremendous. If done incorrectly, KPIs might be used like a drunk would use a light post, for support not illumination. You could call KPIs industry-speak for one method to measure employee, departmental and/or organizational performance. If effectively constructed, they can drive the right workforce actions supporting strategic and operational objectives. KPIs could be tied to achieving an operational goal, such as on-time customer shipments,... [More]
Finance teams are the analytics captains of the corporate ship empowered to provide upper management, business units and support units like HR, IT and Procurement with all the data points to fully understand past, present and future performance for decision making. However, as is often the case, because of the ever expanding list of corporate information systems and growing regulatory requirements shouldered by finance departments, the corporation's most important analytical asset remains mired in just completing mandatory tasks... Getting the workforce to make the right decisions that support organizational strategy is a challenge every business faces. If your business struggles with this you shouldn't feel alone because this dilemma dates all the way back to the days of the Roman Empire as they struggled to keep their distant republics aligned with their centralized policy-making.
How does your company ensure the workforce is doing the right things day-to-day while avoiding the never-ending red herring traps that can pull them into less critical, time... [More]
