The results for my blog worked well... however, these improvements were targeted at my blogs home page. Let me explain: Over the last few months I noticed a pattern. When searching on terms, for example HTML5, articles published on developerWorks had far greater SEO rankings than developerWorks blog entries on the same subject matter. While my blog home indexed well, my individual blog entries did not.
In recent times, Google has continued to refine their search algorithms to the point where two factors are now critical to SEO: Your page title and the page content itself. A quick examination of my blog showed me where my problem was. With Lotus Connections, your blog title is configured in Settings, and this string becomes the title for your blog's home page. The problem with this approach is that each blog entry you publish has this same title! To improve SEO for my individual blog entries, I would need to supplement my blog title with the addition of the blog entry title.
One of the many reasons I'm such a big Lotus Connections fan... is the ability to create and update the blogging template. After spending a few minutes in the templates.. sure enough, there was my solution.
From within the _header template - locate this code:
And replace with this:
What this code does is pre-append your blog entry title to your existing blog home title. Now when Google indexes your blog entries, all the additional keywords that describe your actual blog entry are picked up! With this update.. your blog entries are now on equal footing with any other stand alone web page, such as a developerWorks article. Remember, your blog entry title now plays a significant role in SEO, so choose your title carefully!
