AIXpert Blog is about the AIX operating system from IBM running on POWER based machines called Power Systems and software related to it like IBM Systems Director, PowerVM for virtualisation and PowerSC for security plus performance monitoring and nmon

One way to determine if there is an I/O bottleneck in AIX's Logical Volume Manager (LVM) layer is to run the "filemon" command. The filemon output shows I/O response times for both Logical Volume (LV) and Physical Volume (PV) layers. If the difference is over 2-3 ms, there could be an I/O bottleneck in LVM. If so, check the LVM buffer statistics at peak I/O loads. Run the "vmstat -v" several times, and look for increasing "I/Os blocked" in any of the buffers. (The rate of change is important, not absolute values). Use the "ioo" command to... [More]
Here is a great index page for AIX information. Most ofthe links are to www.ibm.com ... but you get to avoid theIBM search engine :-) One of the very nice features is that every link (or leastevery one I tried) opens a new window. http://www.aix.lap.hu There is also a Google-based search engine for AIX: http://www.aixsearch.com
Starting in AIX 5.3 ML5, there is a new "topas -R" option that records theperformance of all partitions on a physical server. The command is runon just one server, and the output is stored in the /etc/perf directory. The "topasout" command converts the output file into a CSV or XML file. The CSV file can be imported into the nmon Analyser 3.2.3+. (Requires AIX 5.3 TL5 service pack 4 with APAR IY87993) The advantage is that topas is a supported tool. The disadvantage isthat it is not well documented, and you have to do some of the parsing. ... [More]

A POWER user asked ATS: "How to replace an old HMC (7042-CR4) for a new model HMC (7042-CR8) with the latest software?" Out of the two of us: my colleague Gareth Coates is by far the HMC expert and so I deferred to him and here is the response. The HMC documentation and Redbooks don't seem to cover a HMC hardware replacement but it is simple to do - if you just treat it as a software upgrade only to a different machine. Fortunately, if you unplug your old CR4 after the backup then you have a very simple recovery... [More]
How many Shared Storage Pools in the world? In the recent IBM Edge2015 Technical University conference I had over 160 people join my sessions on SSP. This shows considerable interest on the new features and what is coming next. The release later in the year has a LARGE new feature that we have been waiting for and a bunch of smaller ones that are useful and increase usability - but I can't say more without a Non Disclosure Agreement :-) Just want you to know there is lots more on the way. The Q1 2015 new... [More]

If you're planning to upgrade the microcode on your p590/p595 system, I recommend waiting for the 153 version which should be out soon. (The current version is 150, Nov 2005) If you have already planned an outage for the upgrade, I would consider downloading the 153 ISO image from the server located in Boulder. open a DOS window ftp testcase-blue.boulder.ibm.com enter 'anonymous' as the id enter 'your e-mail address' as the password cd /hardware/fromibm/9119/ bin mget 01SF230_153_120.iso Be sure to check the prereq's before upgrading: -...
