I HAVE UPDATED THIS BLOG WITH BETTER, UP TO DATE AND CORRECTED INFORMATION FROM THE DEVELOPERS Read the comments for lots of useful information - Thanks Guys for the corrections WARNING: Advance Technology Support (ATS) Europe is getting reports today from users and IBMers that the POWER7 firmware 770 level as a pre-req check missing! could be much better . This results in the HMC agreeing to upgrade your POWER7 or POWER7+  machine to firmware level 770, when it is not supported and does not work. This causes very bad problems: On smaller... [More]

The new  VIOS Shared Storage Pools 3 (SSP3) arrived a month ago and I have all my VIOS updated now to VIOS 2.2.2.1 plus fixes. This brings with it the regular VIOS improvements but also new features for SSP3 including: Better pool use stats for example see the below lssp command and the Used percentage and Unused(mb) columns and the over view output too has new data $ lssp -clustername stars -sp atlantic -bd Lu Name     Size(mb) ProvisionType %Used Unused(mb) Lu Udid orange7a    32768    THIN             9% 29615        7d58538152 …... This is part two covering the POWER8 based Hardware Management Console The first part was covering the installation on the new POWER8 based Hardware Management Console. You can find it here: AIXpert Blog on HMC_7063_CR1_hardware_install_POWER8_based_HMC First a small recap on what we covered at the end of Part 1 about the network ports. Below we can see the lower HMC has three network ports in use. The low HMC has VGA screen and USB keyboard and USB mouse. Two power supply cable from the HMC to two different Power Distribution... POWER8 Watts, Temp, SSP I/O & Server/LPAR stats from HMC REST API - Version 3

Ready for use. Please feedback success or problems.  I will actively support you. See Download section. Objectives: In this version, we will extract the POWER8 energy stats (Watts electricity and Temperatures) in 34 lines of Python code using a new Python Module. The Shared Storage Pool I/O and Server = LPAR stats work the same way but as there is more stats take a little more code but works the same way.   Output: Sample output for Energy stats - for SSP I/O and Server +LPAR performance stats fine the grapghs later on.   Sample... Shared Storage Pools - Migrating to New Disk Subsystem

I got this interesting question from Andrew Bielecki ( BieleckiAP 060000HJ8U ) from a different blog entry: I have 10 VIO servers with 16TB storage pool (16 x 1TB LUNs) on EMC VNX storage which we want to migrate to EMC VMAX3. What would be the best way to migrate this pool? Should we add 16 LUNs from VMAX3 and remove 16 LUNs from VNX or should we use failgrp command and mirror pool on VNX to VMAX3? It is a good question as there are many ways to do this operation and you are thinking of two good ones. The actual underlying disks subsystems... [More]

Shared Storage Pools 5 - advanced lu -list the search continues

This is an update to an older AIXpert Blog entry here: Shared Storage Pools 4 - The search for a better lu -list command   With Shared Storage Pools phase 5 coming soon,  we have the lu -list command that output the Logical Unit (virtual disks) in Tier then Alphabetical order - hurray! But it still has challenges and one command output can't please every one!   Trouble is everyone has there own ideas of  “perfect layout” It is a "no... [More]

Shared Storage Pools - Hands-On Fun with Virtual Disks (LU) by Example

Warning: If you get the nslim or dd commands wrong then you  will destroy your LU virtual disks & virtual machine content.   Please tell me, if you do - I enjoy a good laugh :-) Please, test the commands & your understanding on a test SSP!   Shared Storage Pool four Ksh script commands and a program that I hope you will find useful:   ncluster - status of all VIOS   nlu - improved lu replacement   npool - storage pool use   nmap - finds if a lu is online (mapped) on any VIOS   nslim - copy... POWER8 Enterprise Power E870 - 3rd Look at the Handles

    nagger 100000MRSJ | | Comments (6) | Visits (9402)

I was recently sent pictures and got questions about the handle colours on the Power System E870 / E880 CEC and System Control Unit. On my early ship beta test machine, the adapter carriers have terracotta (red-ish) handles and on GA customer shipped machine blue . Terracotta handles means customer hot-plug capable - but don't just grab and yank. You must to go through the HMC maintenance procedure at the very least for the adapter slot to be powered off to make it safe to be removed.   Blue handles means you (dear customer) should not... UPDATED: 30 JANUARY 2015 The IBM Official Technote can be found here http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas8N1020533 It clarifies the mean of the ASMI settings i.e. it is the number of adapter slots AND the specific slots AND a further bug only some settings work until the next firmware release. Even with the newer firmware my recommendation stands: Completely Switch OFF the I/O Adapter Enhanced Capacity feature as you install the machine as it needs a power off - Unless you are running Linux on POWER8 with dedicated physical... VIOS Shared Storage Pool Single Repository Disk = Not a Problem

    nagger 100000MRSJ | | Comments (6) | Visits (10164)

Odd. I thought I have put this on this blog before but I can find it now so just in case ... here it is or here it is again.   The SSP4 can have mirrored failure group FC disks to handle adapter, FC cable, FC switch, entire FC disk sub-system, site or VIOS failure. But there is still a single SSP Repository disk.  Isn't this a single point of failure? The answer is " No because you can quickly rebuild the contents of the Repository Disk after it has failed ." You are not meant to know this as it is internal to the VIOS... [More]
