I have tried to get permission to pass on these numbers publically but got no answer at all. As these are facts rather than opinions, I see no harm in them. So I will work on the old theory: "it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission" ... here goes.
The AIX Virtual User Group often asks a few questions as part of the registration process for the next webinar session and it generates fascinating statistics from real POWER and AIX users.
So here are the responses to the AIX VUG questions all taken in Q2 2013:
1) How are you using Live Partition Mobility? ~600 answers
I read this as 53% (34% + 19%) will be using LPM by the end of the year - which is very encouraging. LPM allows load balancing workloads across machines, zero downtime evacuting a machine for upgrades and firmware plus quickly adopting new machines.
2) Do you use the Active Memory Expansion (AME) AIX feature? ~900 answers
AME requires POWER7, AME licensed and is configured at a LPAR level and has proved more effective than we initially thought at freeing up memory for better use. I have customers with a compression factor of 2 (doubles the memory). Particularly, with the latest POWER7+ processors having CPU hardware assist for the compression. With 33% Using and Testing it now but a massive 52% more thinking about it. You can get the amepat AIX command to calculate the cost:benefits ratios without a license or actually switching it on. Then you know for sure, if it is worth the cost.
3) Do you use the Active Memory Sharing (AMS) PowerVM feature? ~ 1000 answers
This requires POWER6 and PowerVM Enterprise as it involves moving memory between LPARs it is trickier to setup with many LPAR on one machine co-operating in using the single memory pool. This is more cmplex the AME. If you have lots of similar low and occasional use LPARs this can prove very useful. So the 32% Using or testing it sounds good to me.
I hope this is useful and encouraging you to switch on a few of these advanced features and get the benefits working for you.
