At the Miami and Copenhagen Power Systems Technical Universities, I covered what we knew about the next release of Systems Director (6.3) planned for 16th December 2011.
One of the hot topics was High Availability using disk replication for the embedded DB2 database for active:passive fail-over. It turns out this feature is not included with Systems Director 6.3 release - sorry about that. The good news, at least, is that this feature is in development and working for the next release of SDMC, which is based on Systems Director 6.3 code.
This highlights the need to ensure that you regularly backup your Systems Director database using the smsave command. This backup is required to recover a disaster (if necessary) creating a new virtual machine, possibly on a different machine, reinstalling the Systems Director code and then recovering the underlying Systems Director database. As Systems Director is a Systems Administration tool rather than a production, user facing service and that you can still use "old school" methods in directly using your HMC, AIX and VIOS via graphical and command line user interfaces, it means we don't really have an immediate crisis when Systems Director is not available. It might be worth practising your Systems Director recovery process from your regular backups every now and then.
My apologises for change of function for the 6.3 release, thanks, Nigel Griffiths
