Orlando Technical University - See You There
nagger 100000MRSJ Visits (3267)
I asked the manager as I now need to talk face-to-face to my USA IBM counterparts about these servers and two more much larger servers coming out later this year. My manager said I could go but only if I was a speaker and the conference covered the flight and travel costs. So having talked to the organiser of sessions - Alex Abderrazag. We came up with the four sessions that weren't already covered (amazingly). Of course, it helped to be a regular Technical University Speaker for 10 years and getting good feedback scores. So Yepee! Orlando, here I come.
It is not too late to Regi
I am really pleased with my exciting four sessions. These are based on my experience of the Early Ship Program beta testing the POWER9 Scale-out S924 server for the last 6 months here in the UK, London. I must say it is a fantastic server and full of surprises as we initially suspected they might only be a POWER8 box with faster CPU and system planar but they are far more than that.
P102275 - POWER9 S924 Server First Look Around - 100's pictures of the early machine and my notes of interesting features
I will show you around the new POWER9 S924 Server via 100's of pictures of the early ship program example being tested since November 2017 in London, UK. In the second half, Nigel plans to demo a few new features like the changes to the HMC Enhanced+ and a quick Live Partition Mobility from POWER8 to POWER9 to show the performance jump.
P102276 - POWER9 S924 Server Deep Dive - Some practical details for Technical people selling or purchasing the S924
Please first attend session p101434 "New POWER9 Scale Out offerings at a glance" by Simon Porstendorfer for the overview. Nigel, in this session, will drill deeper into the technical details of these servers for those configuring the servers, using them in solution design or living with them in production. The S922 and L922 are also covered.
p102278 - POWER9 S924 Scale-Out Performance Review - rPerfs, overclocking, thread strength and how the POWER9 turned out to be so fast!
Nigel is to look at the recently POWER9 rPerf numbers & compare with the updated POWER8 rPerf. The new rPerf ranges for different over-clocking modes and threading levels - How do they work? What to expect, if you upgrade POWER8 to POWER9? Plus tuning the VP count to maximise efficiency and free up processors for other workloads.
nmon for the next generation
Nigel's Monitor (nmon) has come a long way is 2 decades. In this session, Nigel reviews the state of nmon today both modes: online on-screen monitoring and graphing the stats later with various tools and includes a review of areas in which nmon struggles. Then we look at the performance monitoring needs for the next few years and experiments with collecting JSON data and live web-based services to short and long-term graphing. Bring your ideas and experience to the discussion. Now the nmon user interface might look something like this:
There are hundreds of other sessions and some 30 to 40, I would like to attend - "So much content and so little time to fit them all in!"
I hope to see you there. Look out for the guy below, come over and say "Hello", Cheers, Nigel
