What's new in WebSphere MQ Explorer V7.1: Part 3
This series of blog articles has been looking at new features in MQ Explorer. Part 1 covered the improved packaging and usability improvements. Part 2 shows how MQ Explorer works with multiple installations of WebSphere MQ on the same machine. In this third part I'll give some useful tips when working with larger numbers of resources in MQ Explorer, and in particular show some of the recent improvements made in this area in WebSphere MQ V7.1. The phrase "larger number of resources" is rather vague so let's pin things down a little!... [More]

Vulnerability risk information for WebSphere MQ
I received a request today asking if there is a list of vulnerability security risk information for WebSphere MQ and asking if there is any way to get notified automatically about these. The answer to both questions is yes. Vulnerabilities are listed using the IBM ISS X-Force vulnerability reporting system. The article at this link Security Bulletin for Websphere MQ talks more about it and contains a link to it called Search for WebSphere MQ vulnerabilities . You can automatically receive updates of these using the IBM Software Support... [More]

CHLAUTH feature in MQ 7.1
The new channel authentication records were added to version 7.1 to give more precise control over access granted to a connecting system at the channel level. This feature allows you to define rules about whether certain inbound channels to a queue manager should be allowed or blocked. The rules can be set up to use IP address, SSL/TLS subjects distinguished Name, Client user ID or remote queue manager name. I'm not going to attempt to go over the features available here but bring a possible issue to your attention that might affect you... [More]

Tips for searching the Information Center
With my current job responsibilities I find that I need to use the WebSphere MQ Information Center frequently. Having been around for a number of years I was used to using paper manuals and then PDF manuals and I was initially resistant to using the Information Center because I thought it was more difficult to get to the topic I wanted. For example, let's look at the WebSphere MQ Information Center for 7.0 . I want to look up the syntax of the REFRESH CLUSTER command, so I open the Information Center and enter the search words refresh... [More]

Are your WebSphere MQ JMS subscribers receiving duplicate messages? Maybe you should use cloned subscriptions.
When creating Java™ Message Service (JMS) subscriptions, it may be that only one message is desired but during testing you receive duplicate messages. Applications using the WebSphere MQ (WMQ) classes for JMS that subscribe to the same topic each receive the same messages. If you have a clustered jvm application subscribing to a topic, you would receive a message for each instance. If your objective is to only receive one message, you may wish to create a cloned subscription. By using a cloned subscription, only one copy of the... [More]

What's new in WebSphere MQ Explorer V7.1: Part 2
In my previous blog entry What's new in WebSphere MQ Explorer V7.1: Part 1 I covered some usability improvements in MQ Explorer and explained why the separate installation of an Eclipse SDK package is no longer required. In this entry I'm going to show how MQ Explorer V7.1 can take advantage of the new multi-version capabilities of WebSphere MQ V7.1. With WebSphere MQ V7.0.1 and earlier you can only have one installation per machine. Now with WebSphere MQ V7.1 you can have multiple installations. You can even install V7.1 on a machine that...
