How do I determine a SOCKETCLOSE value for Outbound Connection Pooling in CICS?
Although the manuals make a great effort in explaining what is needed to configure Outbound Connection Pooling, you may still need some help with tuning a compatible SOCKETCLOSE value that will work within your system. Hopefully, the information below will assist you in making this an easy task. Start by specifying a SOCKETCLOSE value of one minute 000100 (hhmmss) or a value of your choosing. Then, make use of your DFHSTUP statistics output or use the STAT transaction online to capture URIMAP Resource statistics. Specifically observing the... [More]

IBM MQ V8.0 on z/OS systems – Can applications talk?
(post by Alexander Frank) Can applications talk? Can computers talk? Can humans talk? Yes? OK. Let us agree on that one. At least most of us have the ability to talk. Why do we talk? Well, one definition of talking, is “to communicate or exchange ideas, information, etc. by speaking.” Great! Now we are faced with yet another word, speaking. Speaking is “articulating sounds with the ordinary voice.” So, without getting lost in definitions, talking involves exchange of something using voice. ... [More]

IBM MQ V8.0 on z/OS systems: Taking communication to the next level
(post by Alexander Frank) There are so many influencing factors and levels of communication. Just because you said it does not mean whoever you are speaking to understood it. Have you ever been in a crowded and noisy place, trying to talk to a friend? What happens to me sometimes is that I do not hear what my friend said. So I just smile and hope it was not a question. Not the perfect way, I know. But if you have been screaming the whole time and your throat already hurts, you just go for the path of least resistance.... [More]

Debug Tool: No source displayed in CICS debug session
No source displayed in CICS debug session. This is a problem I come across quite often. There are several steps a developer can take to resolve the problem before calling IBM for help: current program loaded is not prepared for Debug Tool This can happen if the program is not loaded from the expected library. CICS found an older or different version of the program first in the DFHRPL search path. Enter DESC LOADMOD in the debug session. Here is an example of the output:
ADDRESS LENGTH EPA FF LOADMOD DSNAME

Are you planning to upgrade your level of z/OS or WebSphere Application Server, or maybe even both, and are wondering how one might affect the other? The Software Product Compatibility Report will help you figure this out: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/prodguid/v1r0/clarity/index.jsp The first page you will see is this: You can select 'High-level' or 'In-depth' reports. The High-level report is sufficient if all you want to see is what maintenance level of the Application Server for z/OS is compatible with the... [More]

WebSphere MQ for z/OS Version 8: New Toys In the Box!
It's the moment you've all been waiting for (I know I have). Version 8 of WebSphere MQ has been announced and will soon officially become available for the z/OS platform (General Availability date 13 June for z/OS, eGA of 23 May for multiplatforms). When I was reviewing early release materials for documentation on the product I was happy about many of the changes that had been implemented by Development. We had seen, at the Support Center, that many of these changes were the result of problems that had come into us at the... [More]
