When to use Application Designer or XML file edition for changes in Maximo applications?
Some users ask sometimes : Should I use Application Designer or edit XML files for changes in my Maximo applications? The answer to that question can be a little bit complex, but I will try to clarify it here. In Maximo you can modify windows that are specific to an application in the Application Designer. However, this is not available for everything that you would like to change, for example, you cannot edit or add fields to the Location lookup screen. For these things that you cannot change in Application Designer, the changes should be... [More]

Domain restrictions for specific user, without affecting security group users
Maximo controls the access and privileges by security groups , where each security group has associated users that will be affected by changes in the security groups privileges. Then, on a beautiful day you are faced to a challenge. You get to know that one specific user is special and needs very close attention in regards to access to domain values, such as the list of Work Order Status. You have a way to determine that the whole security group that the user belongs to, will have limited access to specific status values but you still have a... [More]

From the Maximo Support Desk - Using Job Plan Sequences on PM Records
You can use the Job Plan Sequence tab on a PM record to minimize and simplify administration. If there is a need to insert additional or different Job Plans into a PM Work Order generation sequence at specific intervals, this is your solution... A single PM can provide the scheduling and maintenance of multiple Job Plans for a single asset or location by inserting alternate or additional Job Plans at certain intervals in the Work Order generation scheduling sequence. This is accomplished by using Job Plan Sequence... [More]

Work type not populated on work orders created from Condition Monitoring
Problem: Work orders created with Job Plans from Condition Monitoring don’t have a work type associated to them. Solution: Work type can be added to Condition Monitoring or Job Plans and crossed over to the Work Order upon creation. If the Condition Monitoring template is set-up to trigger a PM, then work type is already on PM and will populate from the PM onto the work order so no configuration is needed The first thing we will need to do is go to Database Configuration. Using Database Configuration, we will add Work... [More]

Add a new field to item lookup.
Use Case: you have a smart number for an Item and the Item number is an autonumber. Most technicians know the item by the smart number. Is there an easier way to find the item rather than going to the Item Master, searching and returning with value? Solution: Yes, additional fields can be added to the look-up. A user only needs to click Select Value from the Detail Menu button and then the lookup dialog can be filtered and selected based on smart number. See the screenshots below. Smart # is a field that you... [More]

Set up a PM with an expiration flag to automatically be deactivated
Some clients have asked if it possible to set up a PM so that it is no longer valid after a number of work orders are generated or past a certain date? With a little configuration and the use of an escalation, a PM can automatically be deactivated based on number of uses or date (or any other criteria that is applicable) In Database Configuration, add a field to PM to mark it for limited use ... Email Listener: Image Handling
This article on email listener supported content types touched on attachments. We'll extend this discussion a bit further to specifically address image handling. The email listener does not parse or alter the message body of an incoming free form email. A message body directly becomes a ticket's long description (i.e. description_longdescription) attribute value. There are three types of image handing in emails: Attached In a multipart message, an attached image will have a content ID in... [More]

All in a week's work: upgrades, updates, moves and installs
I've been doing a few upgrades (major and minor) this week. See below for my current VM setup. The one with nothing extra on it is serving as an Active Directory server only (and contains all maxdemo users). Monday I upgraded a maxdemo Maximo 7.5.0.7 to 7.6.0.0. This instance has Scheduler and Calibration enabled, and I installed the Maximo 7.5 versions to maximo 7.6, since the 7.6 versions of those products are not yet available were not available at the time I installed it (Calibration 7.6 was released last Friday, and Fix Pack 7.6.0.1...
