Lets turn on lights with Maximo...
It's been awhile since my last blog and I wanted to get something different posted then what I usually would talk about. Ok, well this will actually be a lot different as I'm going to talk about how we are going to be turning lights on with Maximo...Yes you read that right, we will discuss Maximo and IoT and how we can turn a light on when a ticket is entered. I will start by saying, this is something a colleague ( @Cechovsky 3100003ATC ) and I decided to do to bring Maximo in to the IoT space in our own way and have some fun... [More]

LDAPSYNC fails with connection closed
Problem: In LDAPSYNC, if a large chunk of data takes a long time to process and the processing time exceeds the Active Directory’s idle connection timeout setting ( MaxConnIdleTime ), it can cause the Active Directory to close the connection which leads to synchronization failure. Symptoms: LDAPSYNC fails with errors like these: BMXAA6752E - Group synchronization could not be performed because of error connection closed. The error count was 148. See the associated message. Correct the problem and try to synchronize again.... [More]

LDAP Planning Guidance
When you plan to use application server security to authenticate TPAE/Maximo users against an external directory you also have the option to synchronize users and/or groups and group memberships. There are a few decisions you need to make before you begin. Who will be synchronized? You can use a standard LDAP filter to synchronize a subset of users into the system. These users can be in a pre-defined OU, role or group or can simply meet a standard query. Synchronizing a subset of users will improve the performance of the sync and also improve... [More]

Large files are generated in TMP directory when reports run
If large files are getting created in a tmp directory all the time, or some of the time, it is because users execute long running reports that cause these files to get created in the temp directory. Even Query-based reporting, or QBR, can cause this to happen. However, this is by design. Generally speaking, Birt will clean up after itself. It is only an issue once these large files start filling up the drive and the server runs out of space. Two known causes when these temp files do -not- get auto... [More]

LAFIXes should never be applied on a version that it was not intended to.
To better understand what the title mentions, let me explain some content. FIXPACK Fixpacks deliver product defect fixes that have undergone a full development release cycle and the most extensive QA testing of all maintenance releases. Fixpacks are cumulative and each new fixpack contains all fixes from all previous fixpacks/interim fixes for that release. An example of a Fixpack is : Maximo 7.6.0.6 Feature Pack INTERIM FIX (IFIX) Interim Fixes go by many names like; Hotfix, Cumulative Hotfix, IFIX. They all relate to the same type of... [More]

Labor Reporting field is not searchable in List tab
Labor Reporting field is not searchable in List tab after upgrade to Maximo 7.6 In Maximo 7.5 the STARTDATE attribute in LABTRANS object was a persistante attribute in the database. So, being persistante, the field is searchable in the database so in the UI. However, the structure changed in Maximo 7.6. Now the STARTDATE attribute in LABTRANS object is not a persistante attribute in the database. Instead, there is a new attribute called STARTDATEENTERED. This is a new attribute which is same as STARTDATE but persistante.... [More]

Key descriptions and differences between Escalations ,Automation Scripts and Conditional Expression Manager in Maximo Base Services
In Maximo support, we often get various questions on the functionality of these 3 apps, however also the question what will be the best to use. As we do not provide guidance on what app is the best to use, I like to set them out on their functionality,so you can choose yourself which one would be suitable to your needs. There are lots of methods to do a configuration or customize Maximo Base Services from the UI down to the object level with Java programming. With so many options available out there , I like to touch on the core 3 core... [More]

Keeping your Maximo Tuned Up and Performing
Maximo is everywhere! It has been around for several decades and is in use by many different industries of all sizes. Client databases have grown in size and complexity over the years. Continued monitoring of database integrity is always recommended to make sure all your I’s are dotted and T’s are crossed. Just the other day I was talking to a client that was experiencing major slowness in performance while generating a handful of Work Orders from the Preventive Maintenance application. They were attempting to generate about 5 work... [More]

Keeping a BDI on your Assets.
Maximo
Asset Configuration Manager (ACM) is designed to manage the
configuration management requirements of complex assets operating in
the aerospace, defence and rail sectors where safety and regulatory
compliance is of primary importance. One
of the central components of Maximo ACM is the Build
Data Interpreter (BDI). At
it's most basic level the BDI analyses configuration managed Assets
position by position to ensure that they comply with the
configuration rules established in the corresponding model. That
said the BDI is a pretty... [More]

Just because you can do something, should you?
Today I'd like to ask the question "just because you can do something, should you"? Just because you CAN ride a unicycle across a tightrope that connects two skyscrapers do you really need to? I mean like why jump out of a perfectly good airplane just because we have parachutes? I mean sure they both sound like great ideas but then again maybe not. I guess it's just me but just because you CAN do something it doesn't mean you always should. Earlier in the week I was talking with one of the members of my team about that... [More]

JMS Messaging - High availability, scalability and Maximo Integration Framework using a single Service Integration Bus
In the past, the documentation that was created for Maximo clustering with JMS resources typically contained separate buses – one per cluster – to avoid affecting performance while loading data to Maximo, but this is often complicated and has drawbacks when it comes to high availability and scalability as well as ease of configuration. I admit I'm probably responsible for most of that documentation and generally there are always workarounds available to cope with the separate buses when more than one cluster needs access to the same JMS... Java Security warning can continue even after applying Maximo Interim Fix containing newly signed applets as indicated in http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21972870 . Solution: 1) Delete the WebSphere temporary file caches (temp and tranlog) following the procedure described in http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21660821 2) Delete the web browser cache (internet temporary files and cookies) from every computer that accesses Maximo.

Item Master vs Inventory for item records in Maximo
You may experience a scenario where some of your item records are available in different statuses in Maximo. Is this a System, Set, Organization or Site level record?
Sometimes you are working with records in Maximo and you are not aware whether Maximo requires to associate a SITEID information or ORGID information, thus you get confused and would like to know what records in Maximo are considered to be level specific. For example, you have in a work order an asset record associated, which is a site-level record, and at the same time there is a job plan associated, which is a system-level record. Finally the work order record is a site-level record. So... how do you get a list or information about the... [More]

Is there a way to know how many records are affected by a status change?
Just a heads up, regarding this case where you would like to see a count of records that will be affected by status changes displayed when performing a status change, the standard Maximo functionality does offer the above in one scenario but not in all of them. In Maximo 7 versions this is not included, as per product design, as the change status information comes from the class files, where you may not be able to modify the information. When the information is coming from the mbo's, this will not be possible without the java... [More]

Ever wondered if the Interim Fix you were sent for a specific APAR a while back and that you didn't get the chance to apply on your Maximo environment, is still up-to-date? Since those are cumulative, it might be worth applying the latest version and therefore include the more recent APAR fixes delivered for that specific fixpack level. Is MS Office 2016 supported with Maximo?
We have had some customers ask if MS Office 2016 supported with Maximo 7.5.x and 7.6.x? . Short answer, MS Office 2016 is currently not supported as it has not been fully tested with Maximo. However, if you really still want to use MS Office 2016, you will notice some of the functions in Maximo such as the download list will not work nicely and not allow you to open it like previously. You may get errors like this, when trying to open the downloaded list from Maximo in Excel.. This is because with MS office 2016, a feature called Extension... [More]

Is it safe to have multiple LAFIXes in a Maximo environment?
Have you asked yourself whether it is safe or not to have multiple LAFIXes in a Maximo environment ? Well.... In response to your inquiry, here is an explanation that I believe will help. My answer to you is Yes, there is a way to get individual fixes (aka LAFIXes) , however we do not recommend it, and I will explain why. The LAFix: Limited Availability Fix - is a one-off hotfix containing a fix for ONE specific APAR, it is an unofficial way to deliver emergency fixes for severe product issues that cannot be delayed until the next... Is it safe to delete entries from the TASKSCHEDULER table ?
Have you experienced a scenario where some crontasks or escalations do not appear to be running, while other records are running normally? There are multiple reasons why an escalation is not firing correctly. Before checking anything else, verify the cron task settings for this particular crontask from under Configuration > Cron Task Setup, and check the value for 'Schedule' field. Schedule is what governs the frequency of the cron task. Besides this, you could check which process is kicking off this escalation process. Could... [More]
