BiLog: Functionality in your Pocket...
Do you remember the feeling when you put on a pair of pants that you
haven’t worn in awhile, and find money in your pocket? Whether its $1, $5 or even sometimes $20 –
its an unexpected surprise – finding this great treasure that you didn’t
know you had. Over 4 million Facebook
users agree with this amazing feeling of ‘Finding Money In Your Pocket’! This same feeling holds true to the Business Intelligence (BI) features in Maximo. We often spend so much time talking about the new features in each release, that we neglect the... [More]

Are you an Inventory Historian?
The Merriam Webster online dictionary defines a historian as: "a student or writer of history." If you consider the title of this article then, an Inventory Historian (if there was such an occupation) would be someone who writes the history of material inventory. Joking aside, if you have been a Maximo inventory user somewhere in the past 15 years, you essentially moonlighted as an inventory historian. The inventory functionality in Maximo has always provided for tactical, actuals-based recording of material transactions into... [More]

BiLog: Rebuilding Houses and Building Reports for Localization
When disasters like the massive earthquake earlier this year in Japan, or the deadly earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010, people and organizations from all over the world work together to help and rebuild these devastated areas. I am very lucky to have the opportunity to help locally by rebuilding houses for people in need through Habitat for Humanity. This weekend I worked with an amazing team of individuals, including power company employees, a school teacher, a housewife, a retired architect, and high school teenagers, in rebuilding a... [More]

Integrated Operational Management in Maximo Nuclear
Operational management – tying together the efforts of the
distinct functional areas to achieve overall business goals – is an important part
in most businesses. Integrated
operational management in commercial nuclear power stations is a mandated
essential. Operational management in nuclear power means that intense
scrutiny is applied to all activities with the potential to affect the safe and
reliable operation of the plant. The
scrutiny takes the form of thorough consideration before, during, and following
the activity. The... [More]

Maximo Calibration - Setting up Loop Calibrations
Loop
Calibrations What is a loop calibration? A loop calibration is a set of instruments
that are grouped and calibrated together. The input and output of the
whole group determines the pass or fail status of the calibration. This solution allows for an instrument to
belong to one calibration loop at a time. Use case A
set of instruments in one area that work together and are calibrated
collectively in order to establish the pass or fail status of that one work area. Business Value The loop calibration, and

BiLog: Identifying Active and Inactive Reports thru Report Usage
During the last week of July, over
800 individuals gathered for IBM Tivoli’s Pulse Conference in Melbourne, Australia. At the second largest Tivoli Pulse Conference, attendees networked and interacted to learn from IBMers and Business partners on the latest functionality and products and from other
attendees on implementation best practices. This blog post has more details: Australian Pulse Conference. I had the amazing opportunity to present on Maximo Reporting at this conference, and a key topic that came up with a number of clients was... [More]

Barcode Scanning with Maximo Everyplace
As the product designer and architect for Maximo Everyplace ,
I want to pass along the latest product information and answer the common
questions that I hear. In case you’re not familiar with Everyplace, it provides
the ability to use Maximo on an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Android device. To
use it, you need to be on version 7 of Maximo, and at fixpack 7.1.1.7 or
higher. Many people assume that, because there are phone apps that
allow them to scan barcodes with their phone's camera, that they'll be able to use
this same functionality... [More]

Conditions can be quirky...
Back in the lab in Littleton, MA, we are busy closing out issues and defects for our next fix pack. While assisting in this effort, I realized that some of the behavior of conditions and data restrictions can be confusing. For example, I was putting a qualified data restriction on the Ticket object and wanted only records with a particular status and priority to show up. I need to create the condition for the SR view for it to be applied in the Service Request application. I also need to create the condition for the TICKET table for the... [More]

BiLog: Performance Enablers….Schedule Only Reporting …80/20 Reporting Rule
In last week’s BiLog , we talked about report usage, and how
you can utilize a variety of mechanisms, including reports, KPIs or result sets
to monitor which reports your users are and are not using. Report usage information is also critical in identifying
your reports which take to longest time to execute, as you want to insure these
are optimized for report performance. Why is this important?
Like so many things, reports follow the 80/20 rule, where 80% of your
report processing is done by only 20% of your reports. So as you... [More]

Keeping a BDI on your Assets.
Maximo
Asset Configuration Manager (ACM) is designed to manage the
configuration management requirements of complex assets operating in
the aerospace, defence and rail sectors where safety and regulatory
compliance is of primary importance. One
of the central components of Maximo ACM is the Build
Data Interpreter (BDI). At
it's most basic level the BDI analyses configuration managed Assets
position by position to ensure that they comply with the
configuration rules established in the corresponding model. That
said the BDI is a pretty... [More]

Permits in Support of Work Orders...How to Plan and Execute Work Efficiently and Safely
(OK, it's a clunky title, but I'm trying to be clear. Permit to Work, Work Permits, and variations of these words have meanings that depend on the
industry and the region using them.) In this blog I'll describe how the Permits application in Maximo for Nuclear Power supports performing work safely through effective planning, execution, and control of the permit process in a work management framework. I hope you'll read on, even if you are not in a nuclear utility line of business. All businesses today have pressures to cut costs and must... [More]

BiLog: Performance Enablers….Traffic…and Optimizing Complex Report Processing
Do you ever find yourself stuck in car or airline traffic? If you have, do you find yourself deeply sighing or groaning in agony thinking of where you need to be? Or do you become a pounder – pounding your fists on the steering wheel or your feet thru the airline concourse while a number of choice words come muttering out of your mouth? Living in the Boston Area for the last 12 years, I’ve encountered a number of car and airline traffic jams. My most recent traffic jam was last night when... [More]

Sometimes it's cool to be a 'geek'
This past week I was on vacation with my family. We did Disney World, the Disney Cruise and a brief stop at Kennedy Space Center before heading home. We traveled with 5 families and with the outreach programs I do (I run e-Week programs at schools in my home town which shows kids that engineering jobs can be fun) they all know IBM. We saw IBM logos on cash registers, as sponsors of an exhibit at EPCOT and we even got a glimpse of a Maximo Work Order on a mobile device when we saw a technician at our hotel making a repair. My 9 year old... [More]

BiLog: Performance Enabler….Limiting Data Overindulgence thru Record Limits
Sitting here in my cube with my stomach growling at a increasingly rapid pace, I can’t help but think of how the Maximo database is like a food buffet. Those huge, long food buffets overflowing with food often found on a cruise ship, in Las Vegas, or if you’re lucky, at a neighbor’s open house. We often overindulge at these buffets, eating well over our capacity – because the food is there and we think we need it. Like buffets, Maximo users often have access to large amounts of data. And with this access, users may believe they need to... [More]
