Within the Maximo and Version 7 product lines, there are numerous ways you can analyze your data. As a Balderdash lover and an IBMer immersed daily in a sea of acronyms, these data options are listed below in increasing range of data analysis capability. QBE – Query By Example. Using your application’s filter and/or query, you can immediately download your results for additional analysis in Microsoft Excel. KPI - Key Performance Indicators. Visual indicators displaying status against predefined targets. RS – Result Sets. ... [More]
QBE (Query by Example) is an excellent way for you to quickly take the results of your application query and/or filters and export them to Microsoft Excel. You can then view each of the list tab fields, and perform additional analysis, combine the data with other queries, print, or save. However, often users want to see additional fields in the exported data. And the fields that one user may want to see are not the same as fields another user may want to see. You can modify the list of fields that displays with the Application Designer. ... [More]

People often ask me about Linear Asset Manager. Not
what it does - but why the product was developed in the first place.
Here's the story...
In May 2005, Don Beahm, who was the lead product manager for
Maximo Transportation, and who now works for Accenture, stood before me and
drew a line on the whiteboard. "This
is a linear asset," he said. "It is not a pump, and Maximo should not
treat it like a pump." He went on to explain that linear assets have
characteristics that change over distance. On... [More]

Do you assets talk to you? Are you even listening? What could you do better if you knew what they were saying? Discussions with the various levels of government, private sector and others always reveals a complex matrix of systems that are unique to a particular department/division/branch/line of business that are not shared with any other groups. So the point is many times there are systems in place that perform monitoring and reporting about the current health of the asset, however combining the data from those systems is complex, difficult... Clear. Cold. Refreshing. Three words which could describe anything from a glass of water, a plunge in the Arctic Ocean, rice noodles, a class mint Mojito, or a run thru a sprinkler on a hot July Day. Maybe another image comes to your mind...and you may quickly see where I'm going with this. Text descriptions can often lead much to the imagination . Visual ambiguities however, can lead to serious issues in our work environments, as everyone must have the same, consistent understanding of assets, items, or work orders. A solid way to enable... The Merriam Webster online dictionary defines a historian as: "a student or writer of history." If you consider the title of this article then, an Inventory Historian (if there was such an occupation) would be someone who writes the history of material inventory. Joking aside, if you have been a Maximo inventory user somewhere in the past 15 years, you essentially moonlighted as an inventory historian. The inventory functionality in Maximo has always provided for tactical, actuals-based recording of material transactions into... [More]
When disasters like the massive earthquake earlier this year in Japan, or the deadly earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010, people and organizations from all over the world work together to help and rebuild these devastated areas. I am very lucky to have the opportunity to help locally by rebuilding houses for people in need through Habitat for Humanity. This weekend I worked with an amazing team of individuals, including power company employees, a school teacher, a housewife, a retired architect, and high school teenagers, in rebuilding a... [More]
