The view of your data is very different in Maximo than it is in Cognos . Maximo’s very effective Business Intelligence tools, including KPIs, Application Exporting and Reporting, enable operational insight on your data. Cognos offers a very different analytical view on that same Maximo data.

When faced with choices , I often try to remember the food pyramid when deciding between a decadent red velvet cookie and a crunchy Kale chip. Consume large quantities of green leafy vegetables, and small quantities of delicious sugary treats the pyramid reminds me – while my stomach violently disagrees. Likewise, a pyramid is key to understanding Maximo report users. When we talk about Maximo users in terms of reporting and data analysis – we put them in the five categories shown here. These categories are based on the user’s job... [More]
Last week I showed you my cubicle . This week, I used one of my favorite tools – my Magic 8 Ball – to see if I should show you more, and received ‘Reply Hazy’ in return. Okay…I’ll follow its guidance and hold for now. But what I do want to share today is more information on Report Upgrading. When Maximo 188.8.131.52 was initially released, we noted that it included an upgrade to BIRT 3.7.1 . If you were using a previous version of Maximo (and hence a lower version of BIRT) we recommended report upgrade best practices which included backup... [More]
Read my mind. Have you ever muttered those words when someone asks you where the milk is ? or if there any cookies to go with that milk? Don’t try to read your user’s mind when detailing a report specification. Instead, work with your user to fully understand his report requirements, which you can then translate into a deliverable report specification. As noted in the last BiLog entries, we have been reviewing the best practices Of report specification development which include (1) Understand report capabilities (2) Understand user... [More]
The aftermath was astonishing. An energetic team of dedicated high school students strung toilet paper from each tree branch at our house in an annual tradition celebrating seniors on their swim team . While our daughter basked in the glory of at last being a senior, I gazed at the 100’s of strands of toilet paper, and wondered ‘What will the neighbors say?’. While understanding unique traditions may make your toes twitch, understanding report capabilities is key to developing accurate and achievable report specifications. In the last... [More]
Do you know how to fold one of these…..while cramped in car traveling 72 miles per hour…with a husband exasperated that you also don’t know how to read one…along with a dog panting in your ear and your child questioning ‘ Are we there yet ?’ We’ve since graduated to the amazing electronic GPS technology where a woman in a lovely voice calmly directs us to where we need to go. Truly loving this technology where no folding is required! As maps define how we get from here to there, report specifications do the same. Report specifications... [More]
I dissected our kitchen junk drawer this weekend. Although I’m not a hoarder , I did find a 41 golf pencils , $1.53 in Change and and 3 postcard stamps! While on this clearing spree, today’s Bilog dissects how QBR reports are stored in the database to clear up any confusion you may have. QBR, or Ad Hoc reports, enable you to create reports ‘on the fly’ without technical database or report development skills. In this previous BiLog entry, best practices were reviewed to detail which specific users you may want to grant QBR security... [More]
It’s stalagmites reaching over a winding river into the mountains of Arizona. It’s a family of dolphins laughing. It’s a cool rock in the woods. Remember stopping to really take a look at something – whether it was a rock or a cloud – and everyone would guess what they saw? We don’t want you to guess what TCR is, so today’s Bilog will review what it is and how you can enable it. TCR stands for Tivoli Common Reporting. Beginning with the Maximo 184.108.40.206 released in December 2009, an integration to the Cognos Reporting Products was... [More]
Everyone is different. Different physical characteristic like heights, weights, skin tones, and eyes combined with varied backgrounds, skills, beliefs and multiple other characteristics make each person unique. I love going to large events like baseball games where you see massive numbers of diverse individuals - sharing a similar interest. Likewise, your Version 7 users are similar in that they use Maximo, but they are each unique individuals with a broad range of skills sets and job requirements. Because of this diversity, you should... [More]
I found $1.36 in my pocket this weekend. After experiencing mixed emotions of where did this come from and why don’t I remember to take money out of my pocket – I settled on the thrill of finding something unexpected as I detailed here last year. You also may find something unexpected in Maximo with the Report Update utilities. These utilities were introduced in June 2010, and have been enhanced in the Maximo 220.127.116.11 release . In this release, there are now two report update utilities available for Page Break and Auto Layout. Both... [More]
